Just Sold A Trex Escapes Deck!

Then promptly unsold it 3 hours later when my rep calls to tell me it won't be in for 5 more weeks, the boards are not grooved, and it's $3.64 a foot, 49 cents a foot higher than he originally quoted me. The HO really liked the acorn color too, nice medium brown. Oh well, back to the lumberyard for more samples. I sold them on the pvc so that's what they want. Problem is, the Azek brownstone/TT sandridge are too light for her taste, and the TT mountain cedar is too orangey. What to do?

Woulda been another $1000 out of my pocket if she'd insisted, since we already signed the contract.

Looks like I may have to go with CD CX in mahogany. I know it's not pvc but it's the closest thing in a color I know she'll like.

Wow, that's just dangerous. The rep quotes you a price, you write up a contract based on that price, HO signs, you go to order material and rep says price increased by $.49/ft. Not a good way to do business (TREX, not you).

TREX seems hell bent on doing things the wrong way...ah well, just another reason...

Good luck with the project -

Mac

All the more reason to get quotes in writing.

Good call!

And here's a question, the guy who quoted you the original price and the newly revised higher price, was he a TREX rep or a sales rep for a local lumberyard? I'm thinking you would have to buy from someone local and not from TREX directly - all the yards I've dealt with (yeah, all 6 of them!!..I'm soooo worldly!) have 30 day price quotes. Whether in writing or verbally, the price they give me is good for the next month. The only time that wasn't the case was last fall. Cedar prices and availability were all over the place. They DID warn me when I called in that prices were only good for a few days and somewhat dependent on who they could get the material from.

He was just one of the counter guys where I get my decking. I usually do get quotes faxed to me but this time I didn't. That'll learn me....

Ya Know in a twisted way I have to admire t=junk, they never give an inch no matter how Fu$ked they are , how much sub standared product they vomit out, how many wild claims and out right lies they put in print, they Never Quit!!! some how I just have to respect that in a dark way.

Reminds me...my tools in one of my workers car. I first saw a trim nailer in the back seat, further plowing around with him right in frount of me truned up anothe nailer, cordless drill and inpack driver a charger well need I go on.

His reply?? I do know,,,how did this stuff get in you rig?? I do know, when did you put my tools in you car?? I do know!!!! said with a complety straight face with no backing down. How can you argue with logic like that.

Its a Funny World. J.

One good reason to include an escalation clause in your contracts.

I know old mostly means stupid here,
but...
one lesson learned from the 70's & 80's
that won't go away, is escalation clause!
When push comes to shove, you can't depend on
the other guy to eat it.
Hope that things won't get as bad as they were
then (AM quote no longer good in PM), but
don't count on it.
CYOA!

I think you and the customer will be pleased w/ the CDCX Mahog - let me know if you need anything from me on it - it will have all the performance of the Trex Escapes and more. And it has HFS and a better value (i.e, it's cheaper! no PVC and PVC is going through the roof).

Hey Marty, I just called my one local supplier that carries CDCX and he said they're not going to be carrying it anymore, in any color. He wouldn't give me a reason. I thought this stuff was relatively new to the market? Maybe it's just been a slow mover for them. He gave me the counts of what they have left in mahogany, once it's gone it's gone. What they have will be enough for this one job, so that's good. He quoted me $1.80 a foot. That seems low to me, maybe they're just trying to clear it out?

Ya what he said. although i would feel like an uninformed a$$ if iever had to use it, but it should be in the contract as standard.

Escapes is their new pvc lineup-looks to be a great product if it wasn't so pricey. Funny thing is, it comes off the same machines in the same plant as Veka deck, which I get for $2.69/lf.

Sounds like some kind of mixup, who is the supplier? Maybe I can straighten it out. It could be that they were referring to CorrectDeck (sometimes called standard or 1st gen) vs. CorrectDeck CX.

I asked him several times if it was the CX and he confirmed it. DuBell Lumber in Pleasantville, NJ. MY customer is waiting for me to find her something suitable in a medium/dark brown so I was hoping that the CX mahogany would work, but they have no samples so I'm waiting to get a 12' length from another branch.

I would buy as much as I could for $1.80 LF. It normally costs about 3.07 here.

Bro-in-law was quoted $1600 for shingles to do a job yesterday by Lowe's. He was told they would be delivered by a certain time this morning. Delivery didn't happen for whatever reason. He went to get the shingles and was told there had been a mistake, the price was $2600! Heheh, they had to get the law out there. He got his shingles for $1600.

P.S. I'm guessing the mistake explains the non delivery.
