IPE Splinters?

We have been toting IPE decking as a rot and splinter resistant natural product for 3 years now. All the literature we have read states clearly "will not splinter".

An IPE customer called yesterday and said he was not happy with his 6 month old dock. His daughter got a splinter. I have been building pictures frames out of left over IPE deck boards and I got a splinter the other night too.

Have any of you experienced splintering?

Handling ipe, that is unloading it and installing it can give a Person some nasty little splinters that burn a little, they are small and real sharp if you dont dig them out right away they will fester.

Ipe is wood, wood will splinter. The areas like top cap I always use an orbital/80 grit. J. The long forever coming up splinters that happen with pt lumber is what they are talking about.

Well, you said it yourself "splinter resistant".

As long as that is how you have been selling it you have nothing to worry aobut. If you've tended to get a little sales happy and have been talking no splinters then you've got a problem. Like John said, it's still wood.

Oh yeah ipe will splinter, but not the huge splinters you get from other woods just small ones. I would focus selling points towards something else besides being "splinter resistant" cause I don't think ipe boards know they are supposed to be such.

So Funny Al!! John Mon<< geting Major Yucks.

Wood......Is......Wood......I respect Ipe for a lot of reasons. I treat it as I use it knowing what it is,what it took to get it to my Shop, how long it lasts, the many things it can be used for..Side Note>> when raising the grain on red oak water sanding at least 4 times with a hand rubed finish Ipe only takes one pass<< and just generally the nature of the stuff.

Its a Jerk deal complaining or even posting about those small splinters that should have been taken care of by the installer. And if not than get out of the trade and go sell shoes over to the Ar a zona.

Re: IPE Splinters?

Ipe splinters are like steel splinters. I usually have to dig out about 10 of them every night I'm doing an Ipe job. I would never sell a wood deck to anyone on the premise of being splinter resistant. That's way too bold of a claim to make.

Selling a wood deck as "splinter free" would be like saying Trex is "maintenance free"
