Ipe Deck

I need a ball park figure for replacing an existing ptw deck with IPE. The existing deck is 15.6 wide by 13.6 long. There are no stairs or steps involved. Entrance to the deck is by the interior via a Pella double pane, wood sliding door. I am looking for IPE handrails with alumimum balusters. The IPE deck is to be secured with stainless trim screws. I just had the 6 by 6 inch supports replaced with new cement piers about two years ago and these may still be usable. The other end of the deck is supported by a ledger attached to the rear of a row home. The joists may need to be replaced as there are large checks in them and they will not hold a proper length screw. I was looking at composite's called Trex and another brand but I notice they scratch easily and do not want composites if thats what I can expect. What would be the lowest and highest price I might expect to pay for materials and installation including dismantling the old deck.

Lowest Price: 30 Pack of Beer

Highest Price: $20k

Seriously, we get a lot of these questions. This site was not intended to be a site for contractors / homeowners to come in and ask how much to charge for something. If you are a contractor, which your trade has nothing listed which is in violation of the rules of this forum, you would know how to figure out how much to charge for something like this. Search some threads and see what you can do!

Care to share the joke. I have no idea what the costs would be. All I know is that IPE is highly rated and cost more then composites.

$16,210 plus travel expenses from MA and you will need to pull the permits and have a dumpster on site.

Thanks, but it appears I will have to stick with repairing the existing deck. My finances may be differant in about two years, so I'll wait and see what happens.

Ipe costs less than composites but really you got to be a big boy and bid the thing your own self. John

Dumpster? We don't need to stinkin' dumpster. I'll just go over the old stuff with the new. And don't worry about pulling permits. I'm not licensed or insured anyway.

Nope, get out the credit card I take 1/3 down. Once the other guys get their bids down to $9000 I will sub it out to one of them.

Then I will just sub it out to a newbie on here. I am sure he will do it for $3 a SQ FT if everyone on here tells him that is the going rate.

Re: Ipe Deck

Thanks Ken,
I am now leaning towards Trex Brasilia because there are no distributors in my area for Ipe. On one site they say they use a common carrier to ship for small orders. It is normally by tractor-trailer and a vehicle like that would not be able to turn into the driveway in the rear of my property, which means I would have to unload it myself at the end of the driveway and carry each piece (29 lengths of 16 footers) of decking to the rear of my house. The local lumber yard has Trex and can drop my materials at the rear of my property. That cost and labor calculator will be useful, even though it is 3 years old. But I have a distributors cost for the materials and will use that to compare the differance, as like all things, costs go up almost every year.
I think the use of ptw for decking and railings is an atrocity, but people are still asking for it. They will learn. A neighbor just had his deck rebuilt. The decking and railing are secured by nails. A year ago, I told him to make sure they use screws for the decking. Within two years or less, the nails are going to pop.

Re: Ipe Deck

Call George at East Teak. Excellent quality ipe, good prices, and may be able to work with you with an LTL freight carrier. Tell him I told you to call.
