Installing Lattice Under Deck On A Slope
I plan on installing lattice under a deck. I understand how to do the job, however I have a slope that the deck spans. I don't want to do step down lattice, instead I'd like to follow the profile of the slope. Can anyone help me understand how to do this?

Wow...that's some lattice job Mark!
Does height of slope change more than four feet? The nice thing about slopes (and dirt) is that you can make the slope follow a straight line along the bottom of the lattice by doing a little digging or filling. Mark out 8' measurements along your fascia for reference points. Take a start height and finish height 8' feet apart. Cut the lattice on a taper. Pretty simple. You have to cut off the tapered part of the lattice that remains so your next/adjacent run lines up correctly. Snap a line through the centers of the X's and cut straight.

Re: Installing Lattice Under Deck On A Slope
Very nice Mark, the sq. lattice is a nice touch.
I can remember doing a big tall cedar deck back in the 80's that I site build all the lattice so it would have no seams. One guy would cut several 1x2's at a time, long to long of 45 degree angles, stepping them up in size 7" at a time. After a certain point you would have paralel angles which would grow in size or stay the same depending on the grade. Then you would step back down. By cutting several boards the same I could be stapleing several panels at once. It would seem like it would take a long time, but it really did not & looked really nice not having to trim a bunch of seams. Back in the day when I did a lot of cedar decks I would collect all of the scraps from jobs & kept a kid busy just ripping it up into 2x2's for balusters or 1x2's for making lattice at the shop. With your own jig you can easily make oversized panels too, not just 4x8's. |
