I Won't Miss This
Drilled my last holes yesterday for a deck. I generally had someones else do the holes and I would take it from there. But I had to do the dirty myself on this one. I rented one of those Little Beaver monsters and started. Wholly crap I thought I was going to die. The first 36" wasn't bad, then I put the extension on to get the 42" depth I needed and thats when I realized how glad I am moving to FL. The last 8" was clay, that stuff is like suction to h--l. I got two holes done and took the beast back to go for a larger hydraulic unit. Much easier. I'm too old for this!
All this because I live in an area that freezes. |

Re: I Won't Miss This
Don't know who's idea it was to use clay. Hate it here also. Most of VA is red clay. Last fence job I rented a bobcat w/auger and it threw that thing around like a rag doll. Wound up returning the bobcat and breaking out the digging bar.

Re: I Won't Miss This
did you have a bit with a pengo or a spade tip? the spade tips are pretty much worthless, also beavers rotate at a much higher speed which doesnt worg good with most non organic virgin soils, unless you;re drilling in a peat bog or you like punishment, a unit with low speed, pengo teeth with a good fishtail tip(good teeth is key, rental units weather little beaver or bobcat have worn out teeth) is key

Re: I Won't Miss This
I run into clay a lot. And I just use my Hitachi H65 40# jackhammer with a clay spade on it. Shoot I use the clay spade on almost every single hole I ever dig. I only have to go 30" though. I am glad I dont have to try to pull that beast out of a 42" hole
