I Got A Ramp Job!

But there is NO WAY IN HELL I'm doing it for free.

It's an older guy who is disabled but he's sort of a weirdo to say the least. He found me via my newspaper ad and on my initial phone contact, mentioned how he had another contractor hired to do it, but kicked him off the job because he was a clown. When I was there, he mentioned something about "reloading" and I said "Oh, I shoot to, so the guy wheeled off into another room and tossed a LOADED .357 revolver on the table to show me his favorite gun. The barrel was pointed at me and all I saw were hollow points staring at me!

Well, I think this guy might be the clown and the job is in THE worst town you could ever want to build in (anything). The BI is requiring landscaping be added to hide the ramp in front of the house for crying out loud.

We have to cut a new doorway, put in 9 footings, a landing, etc...It's not rocket science, but I don't feel it's a charity case by any stretch.

I saw the other guy's contract for $4500. I'm going in at $8k. Take it or leave it. My radar is over heating just thinking about how whacky this is....

Hope it ends well for you. Make sure you don't hit him with a bunch of extras at the end. We'll assume the worst if we don't hear back from you so make sure you keep us updated.

Jeez, a tree-fitty-seven at the initial meeting.
You keep a sawed-off in the truck right?
Best of luck.

Re: I Got A Ramp Job!

Years ago I wrecked my parents car... so I walked to a friends house a mile away.

All the lights were off, but when I knocked, his dad answered. He didn't let me in until my friend Steve vouched for me. THen he tossed the gun on the table- the gun he had pointed on me thru the door as I was ringing the bell.

The wreck didn't freak me out, but that gun in his control sure did!
I know this kind of individual, and I understand your concerns. If I'm giving away my work for free, it has to be in a situation that I can afford to do it...
(And live to tell of it).

I kind of like those characters. Certainly like them much better than the suburban yuppies living in the big house with no window coverings and furniture left over from their college dorm years still, got 2 brand new cars in the drive way, eat out 7 nights a week and want to know if you will pick up the materials they want you to install from Direct Buy for them.

Re: I Got A Ramp Job!

Seeing guns is no biggie here, we all have them, at home, in the truck & on the body if you have a CHP. Don't like them pointed in my direction tho.

The 2 handicap ramps I just finished did not qualify as a freebie for some disabled person. The church I did them for only had them put on cause the BI busted them.

Ditto. Except when the tool belt is strapped on. G19 doesn't fit in the hammer hook too well.

I live in NJ. You guys would laugh if you saw how strict our laws are here. CCW is not possible for anyone in NJ. Heck, most of my cop friends who can carry off duty don't bother because they don't want the liability of shooting someone. They'd just rather turn the other cheek.

Well yeah... of course... but if the area was bad dont think I would not clean out a pouch for my XD. I have considered building some sort of holster for the bags, but the customers might look at me funny.
