How Long Would This Deck Take To Complete

Attached to house, 14'*29' PT wood, pool to come in at the end of the deck about 4' in the center of the deck, 6*6 posts sunk in concrete, 2*6 decking board, 33" height, 2 set of stairs, 36" rail with regular spindles 5/4*6 hand rail, 2*8 joists and beams. Also an area 3*6 off of house stepping down to the other deck with stairs going all around the 3*6 area.

Also how much would you charge for this. Thanks

How many piers? I would upsize the joist to cut down on the number of piers unless you have an auger... Of course not everyone has hard digging like I do.... So I suppose if its easy digging who cares.

If its all PT.... It should be able to be done in 5-7 working days for 2 guys. Shoot I have framed 12X20's in 1 day all by myself.

Are you price shopping to cheat someone?

I am not sure what that means, but no I don't want to cheat anyone , what goes around comes around, I am just newer to bidding on projects, just trying to get a feel on pricing things out.

Not sure about the codes where you are from but I would find out how close the bond beam can be from any structure. The job sounds like 8 Days/2 guys.

Sounds like a perfect size job to figure out the costs by yourself. Bidding on jobs comes from practice. If you don't believe me, you will know exactly what you should of charged for this job after it's completed.

3' high deck? think about using 4x4 posts sitting on precast pier blocks (the kind with a metal strap you can run a bolt through or the elevated stirrup that keeps the bottom of the post out of water/dirt), compacted gravel beneath your pier blocks.
- no real need to pour concrete footings for that, no real need for 6x6 posts, definitely no need to bury your posts in concrete, they'll rot out....

Sorry man, that's easily one of the most annoying questions asked on this forum. I realize you're a noob, no big, we all were or still are. Please take some time to use the search function of this forum before you start posting all your questions - you've asked for help on a room addition, on using estimating software, on bidding a deck... we're willing to help, but damn, dude, help yourself. Search this forum for the answers to your questions before you ask them... or live with the answers you're given from people having fun at your expense.

Andrew, I'd call that 3x6 area a "landing", it'll sound like you know what you're talking about if they ever compare your grammar to another bid. Also; are you going to scew or nail it?

Add an additional day for working around the pool. You have to lay out for the posts and the extra cuts for framing the joists. This was the second one that I did around a pool the first being about 12 years ago....forgot about the PIAs

I know it can be annoying to you veterans but I thought maybe this is somewhat was what the board was for to learn these kind of things, every ones not at the same level here (I know most don't want to discuss price, and I guess I don't blame them).

YES, I have used the search function and have learned allot in the small amount of time I have been able to use the search and research things, but I didn't find all the answers I was looking for, hence the posts. Thanks

Nice pool deck woodbutcher.

Re: How Long Would This Deck Take To Complete

There should be hundreds about pricing in general... Its all based upon the same pricipal. You need to determine your hourly rate and your day rate. Then you need to determine how long any one task will take you to complete and insert your hourly rate.

Build yourself an excel spreadsheet for all the componets of a deck... Permit, piers (10",12",16",18",24") , 6x6 posts, beams, joists (2x8, 2x10, 2x12) decking surfaces (sq ft) etc etc... Then figure your total material costs for each component... For example I know a 12"x30" hole will take 1 sono tube and 4 (roughly) bags of concrete. So for 12" I would enter the costs of those items plus markup. Then in the next column have your labor costs... If it takes 2 hours to dig and pour then enter your hourly rate X2. Add in a few line items for entering PIA charges either a % or just a $ amount. Once you have completed the spreadsheet and tweaked it for a few months based upon how long it acctually takes you will be good to go.

Re: How Long Would This Deck Take To Complete

Based on the size and not knowing any more about the job, this sounds like it should only take 3 men 4 -5 days, but we have it down to a science.

Re: How Long Would This Deck Take To Complete

Knowing I can do a 12 x21 deck with 42" rail hieght and 1 set of steps, in 12 days (60 to 65 hrs)by myself. I think I might double it, within out thinking about it much. If I was bidding on a job like it, I would give more effort to thinking about it.

Re: How Long Would This Deck Take To Complete

Do you guys find the material and fastener methode makes a big difference?

I just finished up a large deck using the Tiger Claw and it took much longer than a deck I did a while ago using a similar board but different retaining clip.

Also just found out that Fiberon has made some changes WITHOUT telling anyone.

Ready for this? They just switched the stair railing kit to a new style. Problem is the old style was able to accomodate angles from about 22 degrees to 38 degrees. New One 32 degrees only!

Second problem is that they also added more balusters. Old 12 per 6' New 15 per 6'.

I was delivered BOTH styles to this job. Didn't even realize the difference in count until after the cuts. No Difference in Boxes or product numbers.

Also, They are now beading the post corners. Same thing, Never told anyone and delivered both styles to the same job.

WIll post some pics of the project once the facia board is done.
