Ground Level Deck
Read some of the other posts but still curious on how you guys would handle this. I never built a deck without footings and a low deck brings several concerns to the table. I want to build a deck about 14'' high figuired a 2 level platform perhaps one wrap around step with no rails. Half of the area desired to be covered is a concrete slab the other is grass. So I am concerned about un even settling on the grass end and water puddling on the cement end. Another issue getting adequate ventilation for a composite cover while keeping rodents out from underneath. Any thoughts on this approach or technique who be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Ground Level Deck
Cross ventalation is a must for low leval projects 14'' high gives you plenty of room to do this. If the deck is really low I drill 1 1/2'' holes in the rim joist with a screen vent over them if skirting is going to be used otherwize the vents go in the skirting on a deck high enough for it. Its Cross Ventalation your looking for air in air out.
No reason not to use footings on any leval deck. J |

Re: Ground Level Deck
I'm using skirts so ugly side holes are out. I disagree about the need for footings for something lying on the ground as well. But thank you for the reply. My area governs what can be built by lot coverage. I reviewed the survey and found the house itself is already over the current 25% allowed so if keep it on the ground zoning should deem it as patio and not a building structure. Thus avoiding a hassle like getting a variance that will probably only kill the whole idea anyway.

Re: Ground Level Deck
Footings can still be poured if their kept low. More footings and smaller framing members can make a stronger deck. The vent holes are a good idea, and can be made attractive if you drill the rims, staple on screen, then skirt over the rim with holes nicely cut, or louver vent covers, or even a custom lattice-type covering made from cedar or? Good luck.
