Green Building & Decks

What sort of options are out there to be able to promote Green Building practices with deck construction? I know a lot of the composites use recycled plastic, but what else? I just read an article in Qualified Remodeler about the increase in demand for Green Building & thought it would be another thing to set my company apart from the rest.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Dan

One way to build green>> use S American lumber<<

Done right an ipe/garapa/masenramduba deck will last way past our present life time compaired to many projects the hardley go past the 10 year range.

Composite can hardley be called green after the amount of energy it takes to make/transport it is factured in and the amount of virgin material most are using now.

I think you could get sort of silly with some stuff. Like deck rain water run off. You could install an under deck drainage system & empty it into a small cistern with a sump pump & use it for water flowerbeds etc.

Use concrete for footings that contains fly ash.

I think they have to import it on sailboats so they are not burning fossil fuels.

Very few composites use recycled materials, most use new plastic resin. Trex, the big name in composites, does use recycled plastic. Trex has recycle bins at some of the local grocery stores here.

The only apes in south america are humans, although they do have monkeys in the S.A. rainforest.

Acutally the problem in the rain forest/S America is not the loggers its the slash burners. You have to figure doing a project one time in a lifetime compaired to a pt deck that gets torn out in 5 years or so because of splits/cracks/splinters/warping..need I go on... is total green.

Yo dougchips,I will write your article for my usually fee. John

When you responded with "price?" I figured that you were asking me how much I would charge to publish it for you. Since I would allow a link to your site and I don't sell links I can not charge you. If you were asking for payment, the payment comes from your article being found by 40+ RSS feeds and other visitors. If they find your article interesting they can visit your site via the link in your text.

Re: Green Building & Decks

Danno,
I am glad you are thinking about this, it is a personal interest of mine as well.
I think we have the best solution in CorrectDeck CX - we put a thin layer of expensive high-performance plastic on the top where it matters, and then the substrate can be made of recycled plastic and wood. Via this approach, we have recycled 436,000 lbs of polypropylene yogurt tubs so far this year.
I think the 1st-gen composites are a good environmental solution. But as we all know, they are not where the consumer is headed as far as color fade, anti-grease and mildew performance are concerned.
