Gorilla Deck?

Anyone ever install the plastic decking product called "Gorilla Deck" ?(mis-spelling intentional, that's how they spell it). It's an interlocking decking system, designed to provide a dry room underneath. If you're familiar with it, how do you do the posts coming up through the decking, so that it doesn't leak?

Re: Gorilla Deck?

It would appear they don't intend
for you to create any penetrations.
Did you find this?

That brochure even shows a post penetration near the edge in the one inset picture.

Re: Gorilla Deck?

It looks like in some of the photos the posts on the deck are in different locations than the ones that support the railings. I wonder if they are cut off and then some sort of bracket is installed to fit inside a post sleeve??? Don't really know.

Right you are!
Caulk under the post base trim maybe?
Think you'll have to query them.
The finished work pix look like none
of them continue through.

Re: Gorilla Deck?

It doesn't matter what the product is, if you penetrate it with a post it will require flashing. Sometimes it's best to have a roofing shop make flashing that follows the pitch & shape of post.

Re: Gorilla Deck?

Why would you need somebody to make the flashing if you have access to a nice break?? seems like a waste of money?? any insite??

That's a big if...
if you don't have it, you balance the cost of buying it vs. paying someone who's got one.

I have one of those "mini brakes" for making small stuff like this.

Maybe a small kerf around the post up a bit for flashing? Maybe Vycor?

Re: Gorilla Deck?

Actually, you can't flash the post, and have it be of any benefit, with this particular decking. Each groove of the decking directs the water to a rain channel inside the decking. If you flashed the post, that would keep the water out that runs down the post, but all the water coming towards the post from the groove of the board would still dump out underneath.

I managed to contact the manufacturer's sales rep today, and he said the solution is to caulk any grooves in the board where they intersect with the post completely with color-matched caulk for their entire length. Effectively making that particular groove non-functional.

I got it from my father, not sure where he got it (probably Harry Alter), he was an HVAC guy.

I found it (and the picture) at Eastwood, here's a link.

Re: Gorilla Deck?

This is in response to the guy that is looking into gorilla decking. If you will be using it a ground level and you don't care ft it leaks through, it could work okay. If you are trying to use it above an area that it will leak through to the underside DO NOT USE IT. the website says watertight over living areas but this is not so. Run as fast as you can away from this product. I had this gorilla deck installed and it leaked through every where. I had to spend over $21,000.00 to waterproof the area to stop my house from rotting away. It is not watertight.
