Girder Or No Girder?

Im building a deck that is 28.5' long 17' of it will be 16' out and then 11.5' of it will be 20' out. Question is do i need a girder under 2x8 joist spanning 16 to 20' And if so what is the best cheapest way of doing it. Also what is the best way to scab 4' onto a 16' board to span 20'? Thanks in advance!

Nail a 20 footer to the side of it.

Just use some silicone caulk on both ends of the board and hold it for like 10 seconds, should be strong and you don't even need to use nails.

Oh yeah, sounds like you're in over your head.

Look below you, just use silicone or any type of caulk on the endgrain of both boards.

Oh, I just read that's painters caulk is stronger, use that!

I found my crystal ball.
I rubbed it real good and this is the image that came up.
Anybody have any idea what it means?

come on guys!Give the poor guy a break. He is obviously a professional who just needs a little info.

I would the Tico brand scab nails, about 8d should do it. then just toe nail the two ends together and voila! Instant 20' beam. I hope this helps.

Andy.

Wouldn't you recomment Gorilla Butt Glue to compliment the Teco scab nails.
I would also mount to the rim with 44-D Hooter Clips

You've got a bigger problem than cantilevering 2x8 joists 4' over your beam (which is doable - not recommended, but doable)...
you're thinking of spanning 16' w/ 2x8s.
Even if you spaced them 12" oc, your max span is 14'-2 w/ SYP.
