Free Fencing Anyone?

It has just come to my attention that the measuring wheel that I have been using to measure yards for the past two years has been shorting me per ft. which means most of my fences have been charged anywhere from 10'-30' or more too short, that adds up to alot considering I build around 40 fences a year.
I only realized this morning when I laid out a post at 48' with my 100' tape then double checked with the wheel and came up 4' short. I checked and checked again with the same results.

I realized what had been taking place for the past years right away so I broke that mother thing in half.

No offence, but how did you not notice that you were consistantly short materials on 80 fence jobs?

I'd like to think I'd caught that before 2 years went by, but who knows. I would have broke that friggin wheel too.

Time to buy a wheel the works the opposite way, use it for 2 years to make up for the difference.

Geeez, that sucks. Now I'm gonna have to check our wheels. And we did a 10 mile stretch last year...

I've had about a dozen wheels over the years. I noticed with the first one that it was short. All of them have been about 3% off. So, for 100 feet I add 3 ft( oh, what the hell, I make it 5).
The last couple of years I started using a 150 foot vinyl tape.

If you base your pricing on your past costs, it should not make any difference - as long as you used the same wheel for the over-all length. - Assiming you just bid by linear feet.

If you hange wheels make sure you adjust your historiic L.F. costs.

Good point. Still, could affect competitive bids.

Re: Free Fencing Anyone?

I always over order material and I always have a stockpile of material for repairs and such so I never really noticed. Recalling back through the years I can remember only a couple of times where I have had to buy more material to finish up a job.
