Framerman's Deck Project

I'm going to jump onto the deck building bandwagon. I've been on this project for a little while and have done just about everything, so hey! Why not a deck too!

This deck is 2...maybe 3 years old. Oceanside. You now see why you use Stainless Fasteners here! When it rains, it goes uphill. That's no joke.

I'll document everything, but I may need a question or two answered.

The deck is going to be (as of right now that is) 25'x10'....stairs completely replaced.....small bench seating......TrueMarc Decking (a year later, TrueMarc is fading badly. Do not even think about trying this product)......TimberTech rail system from the advice of others here. Plus I saw it at the trade show this morning and I like it, except no SS fasteners.

Here's the start. I made the poor electrician pack the old lumber over to the dumpster

And a special treat for everyone. Take a guess as to what this is. Some of the southern folk here may know what it is.

There's way more crap here than this deck. 4 mattresses and a TV for starters. We're on our 2nd dumpster.

Just one quick suggestion - make it 25 x 12 that way your not wasting so much decking (unless yours come in 10' lengths)

Nice pics for a web site on why SS is a better choice than Galv on the coast

My guess - a jar with a lid on it

Boards are going the long way.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the jar is Cherries soaked in Moonshine.

Re: Framerman's Deck Project

I had 2 questions if you guys could help me out some.

Someone mentioned to me that using PVC decking shoudl be 12" OC for the joists. Is this true? 1" thick boards, they seem OK, but are they gonna droop or something?

And do you guys put the I&W over the top of your joists to prevent the rot? Or nothing at all?

The wind today was incredible. It's amazing how little work you get done with never ending wind in your face. I have wind burn. Looks like I've been to Arizona.

The manufacturer should give specs for what centers you need to use. Most pvc decking I've worked with I've used 16" centers, 12" is usually for commercial jobs.

I know what you mean, working in the wind can be a pita.

Check with your manufacturer. All PVC that I have worked with were spec'd to 16" centers.

Re: Framerman's Deck Project

Are those 4x joists on the old deck? If not, they look pretty thick.

The last pvc decking I ran (and its been a good while ago) , it was still OK for 16" OC.

Best practice is yes, flashing tape (I&W) over joist tops. Reality, that's a lotta flashing tape and a fair amount of add'l labor. Not all clients are ready to pony up the extra $$ for the add'l security.

You should have, at the minimum, a layer of protection between the metal and the ACQ lumber. You can accomplish that by wrapping flashing tape across the face of the ledger board and around the joist ends before dropping them into the hangers or you can try my method of spraying Plasti-Dip (rubberized paint) on the backs and insides of the hangers. It provides an extra layer between the metal and the ACQ without the time and expense of all that flashing tape.

Def. put flashing tape from wall over top of ledger before installing alum. 'L' flashing on top of ledger. The ACQ will eat the alum. flashing.

Regarding joist span, this was pulled from the TrueMarc website:
http://www.truemarc.com/deck.php
Features of Truemarc Decking

  • Class A Fire Rating
  • 16” Centres
  • Superior Mold and Stain Resistant
  • No Predrilling Required
  • Slip-resistant
  • Minimal Expansion and Contraction
  • Environmentally Friendly
  • Unique Embossing System
  • Low Maintenance
  • 25-Year Limited Warranty
Like Neo said, if you run composite or PVC decking on the diagonal, you need to drop your joist spacing down to 12."

Use 6" tape when flashing over the ledger top. That will get you 3 1/2" vertical protection up behind your siding. With wind-driven rain, you'll want the added protection.

Re: Framerman's Deck Project

Don't think he'll need to powder coat
or isolate if he's using all S.S.
If he's even getting ACQ anymore.

'Course, you don't have to use aluminum flashing. Vinyl will work just as well, without the chemically reactive drawbacks.

Re: Framerman's Deck Project

Framerman, I have to ask, you're 10 miles from the CorrectDeck.CX factory, how can you use TrueMarc from China? Come in for a tour, I'll show you around and hook you up with some tips and maybe even some free Fastenators, etc. I always try to be careful about what I say about competitors, but I'm not sure I would start my decking experience with that product. Marty
