Found This On Another Forum...

Hi, this is my first question, ever, regarding a deck I am in the process of having built. I am in pharmaceutical sales, so I am not that familiar with building in general. However, this is what I know:

The dimensions of my deck are: 50 x 24.
It is freestanding, with support beams only around the periphery of the deck.(Yes, this was approved by an architect and I do have a building permit).
The support beams that run underneath the deck are 2 x 12 x 24's, all doubled, on 16" centers.
The wood is pressure-treated.
I will be putting a hot tub in one corner as soon as it arrives, that weighs about 4000 lbs.
I am having an entire outdoor kitchen on the deck as well as all the typical patio furniture, chairs, firepits, bars, etc.
I will easily have 50 people at one time on this deck.

How do I determine what is the live weight load for this deck? I don't want much bounce and of course, I cringe at the thought of any potential catastrophe's. Should I ask the builder to add another 2 x 12 x 24, making the joists a sandwich of 3 every 16"?

Thanks so much and look forward to any response on this subject.

Hmm, 2x12x24'... that is still going to be one bouncy deck.

Wonder what species they spec'd.

There are so many questions...

Architect or P.E.?
Permit passed a 2x12x24?
Why doesnt the 'builder' know the answers?

It's going to sag in the middle. It may take a few years but it's still going to sag. Why such a big free span? I wouldn't put a hot tub on it without some posts under it no matter what anyone said.

I'd break the span at 12'. If ground clearance is an issue then flush frame the beam and hang the joists off it. Add a few more footings and your deck will be ALOT more stiff and less bouncey

never specified a beam span, logic had me assuming at least 2 spans/beam

Okay, I messed with you long enough.

NO, I did not close this topic down, but I was ready to.

At first glance, I was going, WTF, how did a DIY get on here and have 469 posts and even Snoopy responded to him.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

The deck specs are good to go 16 o.c is good to use depending on decking material you are going to need 21 post under that deck considering you are using double 2x12's for beams where the hot tub is going to go i would put its own beam or extra beam and post
