Flat Roof Deck Question

Hi:

I am designing a second storey roof deck in Toronto. The roof is flat and the new deck framing is 2 x 10 P.T. @ 16” o.c. spanning from one exterior wall to the other exterior wall. The framing will supported on 3 sides and lag bolted to house framing on the 4th side. My question is: I want to put something between the deck rim joist and the roof to allow for water drainage. I notice that some contractors use 1” rigid insulation. I have talked to the Building Inspector and he won’t commit himself. Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Re: Flat Roof Deck Question

Slope the roof with strips towards the drain, plywood over that, tar it, torch it, flash where needed.

Build your deck over that. Put leveling blocks on the 4 corners, than do what ya gotta do to finish her up.

Another torontotonian. Welcome to the board.
I have been using 1" rigid foam on rooftop decks for 25 years. Not a code requirement, but it works well. Never had a problem.

I typically use the roof structure as load bearing. Pitch it whichever way it needs to be pitched (mostly off the side of the building or in a scupper box.) Torch down and counter flash to the house and railing posts. Then I cut reverse tapers out of p.t. with 1-1/2" at the shallowest to give myself some meat to screw the decking down to. I frame up the p.t. reverse taper grid and block it around the rail posts to eliminate slide and movement. I make no penetration through the membrane anywhere this way. Reverse tapers allow me to build a level deck and keep railing level. The frieze/fascia board is also in this scenario.

Decking goes down and ties everything together.

Naturally, if you are pitching one way your deck tapers will run parallel to the pitch. If you're dumping to two or three sides you'd follow the pitch with the tapers. Going into a center drain is easy because your perimeter is level so the deck grid could be straight, and set up on rubber leveling pads tarred into the roofing.

But basically this is what I try to accomplish when I come across these. Good luck.

Hey stone, do you use the foam between the sleepers and roof membrane? Does it matter which kind?

Re: Flat Roof Deck Question

What they don't tell you on that website is that you must once a year clear debris out. A major pita if HFS is used or otherwise imo. I did some last year & had GC sign off I wasn't responsible in anyway for that stuff. People won't do the proper maintenance & you will get leaks, imo. Who would want to, yearly?

Clems, is that that the Guy I know?? If so Good To See Ya Man!!
Anyway we build the same way. Torch down over plywood, stringers in the direction of the flow, screw the decking to the stringers Deftentley not past them into the roof. Old School ways like this have yet to be improved on. John Mon
