Basic Shadow box fence, P/T wood, 4 foot in height and the property measurements are as such:
24 feet on left side to end, 20 feet acroos back of property with one 4 foot gate and 24 feet to house on right side.

Re: Fencing Cost....

Approx. $1600 for the fence and $250 for the gate. But, unless you're in the Toronto area/market I doubt my price will be any good to you...

Re: Fencing Cost....

Thanks guys! I also learned a fencing rule of thumb around here. Add up materials, then double it then add tax and then add 0.15 to the end. Make sense?
It puts me right about your numbers.
Thanks for your help!

That is a really old generic way to do many estimates.

I agree bob. In the example he gave it's not a bad way to do it. What he described was a pretty basic/standard fence. As you allude to, it isn't a good formula to use for fencing that involves a significant amount of custom work. For example, I have a couple of cedar fences with custom lattice for the top that I charge out at $65/linear foot.

In the end, it all boils down to the extent of labour involved.

Absolutely, I would of lost me arse on the last fence I did, cutting scallop tops and diamonds.

Right now I just priced out a cedar dogeared shadow box pre fab panel. It is cheaper than if I purchased 18 dog eared boards seperate and I still need would still need to buy the chincy 2x3 horizontals. Well we know it is because the thinner boards they use, but they don't have a thinner board available at the stores either.

Re: Fencing Cost....

Just finished a PT 5 Ft. straight top fence and gate. Gate had a radius "sunrise" detail at the top.

13 feet of fence and gate= $1105.00.

Re: Fencing Cost....

I went with $1450 total for job. That seems to be right where I can make my money and still have a nice fence installed for the customer.

Re: Fencing Cost....

I just put as bid in for a basic 220ft 6ft shadow box PT with two gates for a family member. I gave them some what a family discount with the hope of picking up more business in there sub. I charged them a total of 4,000. I will cover my overhead but will make a smaller profit then what I usually would. It breaks down to $18 dollars a ft. I have quoted all the neighbors at $23 a ft without gates. But I am new with little overhead. Also in my area fence builders only go down 2ft with their posts and I always go down to the frost line at 42in. So I am a little cheaper and still build a sturdier fence. The nice thing about being new and small.

I'm wonering what an electric fence would cost from Imperial Beach CA to Brownsville TX. I think it comes up about 1,561 miles.

That ought to zap the Taco crap out of em.

Whatever you do, don't sell yourself cheap. Around here, there are plenty of "tailgaters" (little tiny one man compnaies working off their pickup's tailgate) who sell their fences for less than my cost. All it does is fragment the market and force responsible companies to either sell at low margins or not do fences at all.
For example, for a shadow box (we call it board on board) fence in pressure treated wood, 5' boards with 1' lattice, I try to get $30/ft. For a group job of 5 or 6 houses, (at least 500 ft), I'll drop to $27.00/ft.
My material is $12 and I pay labour of $7, for a total of 19.00 Add in 20% for overhead, and you get about $23/ft. I still have to make a profit on that.
Yet there are guys running around as low as $21/ft. If they took inot account the time spent selling, their wastes, their flyers, their bad debts, etc, they probably make less than if they were working for me.
Try to convince them, though.
In the last 3 years, I've gone from 5 deck crews and 4 fence crews to 7 deck crews and 1 1/2 fence crews. At this moment I have 25 decks sold and waiting to build.
Make sure you get a profit on whatever you do.
