Fence Repiar
I am repairing an old 6ft privacy fence that is starting to fall over. The customer did not want to spend the money on replacing the fence but wants it to continue standing for a few more years. I came up with supporting every post with a new 4x4 sunk next to the old one. I will use a 2x4 to allow space between the two 4x4's so the concrete can completely surround the new 4x4. I will lag bolt the new post to the old post. The customer however decided that he only wants to pay for every other post to be done. Do you Guys and Gals think this is OK. I will be using 8ft 4x4's sunk 42in with 2 8in lag bolts and 2x4 blocking. There are 84 post total and I will be supporting only 42.

Re: Fence Repiar
Ya know what...I'd tell that fella to stand on one leg while I reach up my own ars and snatch him his grand prize for being the biggest mooch of the year.
Then when alls said done, and a small neigbor kid gets crushed by the falling fence, he can save his own ars from responsibility by slinging that grand prize at the judge. ![]() Bob

Re: Fence Repiar
I'm with Bob, that is ridiculous. Get some 2x4s and nail them as braces on each side of his fence and hand him an invoice for $1000.00.

Re: Fence Repiar
For what's its' worth, you're asking for trouble. IF the posts are that rotted, lags aren't gonna hold. Spacing isn't worth it. After screwing old fence to new posts, you don't need to worry about side/side movement. And Every other post will still be falling over.
At least convince him that he needs every post added. Then make him realize that for all the trouble you;ll have to go through with the existing concrete, lag bolts, 2x4s, and everything else it wouldn't be outrageously more to replace the fence with all new materials and a warranty. Besides, if you do this repair, he will be calling you in a few years, but will want to use the newer posts, which will be a nightmare job. |

Re: Fence Repiar
This is old but it works.
Have him sign a disclaimer/waiver stating that he is aware of the damage and that you will only be responsible for the sections that you work on. I used to put this on estimates frequently.
