Fence Inspections?

Does anyone else have to get their fence post holes inspected? I also have to call for a final inspection once completed. This is just in one city, the rest of the places I work do not require this. This is a somewhat new policy.

The post hole inspection easily adds a day to the job considering the down/wait time. The inspector just comes and puts his tape down in a couple of holes and signs off.

The funny thing is they are passing many very crappy DIY jobs. I see no point in a fence inspection.

Justifying their job and it's importance and why it should not be outsourced to India.

Re: Fence Inspections?

With City revenues way down in my area, I would not be surprised if the Cities started to require permits on fences, to raise a little more spending money.

Hey Mark, I don't know about your area, but in the North Bay here building departments are literally cutting in 1/2. Recently some are shutting down and contracting out to independent inspectors...that's really fun.

Press 27 for English ... we need 16 days lead time for the inspection due to Southwest International Airlines erratic schedule, If you request American Airlines please punch in your credit card number for additional fees and we will arrive between tomorrow and 15 days from now...

Re: Fence Inspections?

Just to give you Guys some grins, In Oklahoma there is No Builders license at all a three year old could build a mulit million project.

But there is a office in downtown OKC that issues Fence Building licenses ,not kidding, costs around $1000 they have their very own texbook the test takes an hour or so. In a real outlook its not legal to put a fence up without it. One of the first questions>> Are you on Parole <<
No one pays it any attention but the whole thing is on the city payroll.

Yes Chris, the building departments in the South Bay have been cut down quite a bit. I don't yet know of any that are subcontracting out inspections, yet.

Re: Fence Inspections?

I spoke with a city building inspector a while back that told me most of the inspectors in our area had been keeping busy writing violations for things like derelict vehicles, trashy yards, boats not parallel with the driveway, etc..

They were just driving around all day looking for violations, they also were looking for recent work that was un-permitted.

Re: Fence Inspections?

Towns need revenues, the construction is down, inspectors have to look busy, so they coming up with new inspections. It is happening all over. I just did a roof job on the house, permit was $100 dollars. I asked when do you want me to call him, she said call when you done and he will do a drive-by.

Re: Fence Inspections?

They permit fences here in Austin, but I wouldn't know what they inspect for or if they even do inspect them as I don't build fences anymore.

No place is worst than Lakeway tho, you can't even spit in your yard without permission there.

Re: Fence Inspections?

There is a small city located just outside of Houston that used to require a string line inspection. You had to find the property pins, set up string lines and call for an string line inspection and then a hole inspection the next day.... What a PITA that was. I refuse to work there anymore as the rules and regulations have become even more stringent!
