Fasteners For Decking??

I was looking and looking through the IRC code book and I can't find if there is a code for the type fasteners for attaching PT wood, not composite(if it makes a diff), to the framing on an uncovered deck..
Is there any code on this? Please help me out.
If there are any additional questions that I should be answering, please let me know!!
Thanks!!

Are you talking about attaching the deck boards to the joists (framing)? If you are I don't know of any specific code, you can use screws, nails, hidden fastener systems, etc. If you're talking about the posts and framing (structural), there are several codes that cover those things.

I saw some company at the JLC show this spring that was selling decking and they promoted the use of a finish gun to install it. They did not look drunk or stoned, they actually felt that little wire nails would hold down their decking.

I could see using regular finish nails but not those wire ones the guns use. I see people using those gun fired wire finish nails to build railings. I can just pull a balusters right out with a yank and the ones I've seen aren't corrosive resistant and rusted in a few weeks, It pisses me off.

Wire ones?

Are you talking about a rack of nails held together by wire and when you shoot a nail, some of the wire stays on? (Coil Nails)

Pa Builders Assoc has a flyer out explaing what type of fastners can be used with PT. All must be at the very least coated, hangers triple zinc coated, nails, lags and bolts must be hot dipped galv. If within (can't remember exact distance, but seemed like a long way) like 50' of a swimming pool or salt water must be stainless steel. Clorine I guess has salt in it or something like that. Being a carpenter not a chemical engineer, I guess I have to take their word for it

Not coil nails (like for siding/roofing) - 16 ga. finish nails

Damn, Mickey that's scary that they use them for handrails!
Saw siders once using them for attaching LP lap siding. They ran them too low and when the mason came to install brick on the house, he pulled the bottom piece off with his hands, the next three courses came too - like freakin' dominoes.

Oh, bujaly, as for your original question - No code that I'm aware of but a well built deck would have -
3" deck screws approved for ACQ wood, 2 fasteners per joist, fasteners not located within 3/4" of edge of wood

Mac
