Experienced Fence Builder, Please Help

I am thinking about adding fencing to my home improvement business. Right now, I do siding, gutters and insulation, however, I would like to add more services and fencing is something I have done some research on. I came across this site and thought some of you may be of help. I am only looking to install a few different styles of fences and had some questions. If someone is willing to answer some of my questions via email or IM, would you please let me know? Don't worry, I am not going to ask about pricing! I just have some install and material questions.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you for your time,

Chad

Re: Experienced Fence Builder, Please Help

And those questions would be...?

See, when you try to take it private in your very first post, you miss out on the whole 'forum' experience -
37 guys answering 37 different ways of doing it,
16 guys saying 'me too!'
3 smart asses popping off some one liners,
5 noobs admonishing the wiseasses for their glib answers,
1 mod droppin' in tellin' everyone to behave,
hmmm, what am I missin'?

Welcome to the forum, Chad - don't forget to tell us a little about yourself...

Of course, if you really want that 1 on 1 experience, I'm sure some of the guys here would be happy to work with you as a paid consultant - curapa and Stone Mountain come to mind. Nevermind, don't ask Stone!
Lotta knowledge here, guy, lotta knowledge.

Re: Experienced Fence Builder, Please Help

hey chad all you need to know is, dig deep, space all your post equally, use a level, step your fence accordingly to the ground and not what it looks like up top unless your gonna fill the gap at the bottom, use 2x4 hangers, it makes your life easier, looks more professional and not to mention stronger, and try to avoid building with 4x4 post, they twist and bend quick and for the future it looks like crap, 6x6 is back breaking and so is the holes and running the wheel barrows, but in the end its lifetime, have fun

Re: Experienced Fence Builder, Please Help

Not sure where you're from but fencing can be a cutthroat business, especially in larger urban centres. Some production fence companies will bang out economical, basic PT fencing for less than $5/lin. foot above material costs (in my area anyway). I have no idea how they do it but they will undercut you on pricing.

So, it all depends on what type of fencing you want to get into. Higher end, more decorative cedar fences will get you more profit but they are less common.

Go ahead and ask you're questions. Staying away from "How much do I charge?" will get you much better responses.

I respectfully disagree. Hangers take longer, are a waste of time and make a fence look like a DIY'er built it.
