Dry Joist Deck System
A question for anybody that cares to give their input.
I've got a homeowner that wants to use a system called Dry Joist. It is another product designed to keep areas below a deck dry. Sort of unique in that the system is actually part of the deck structure and doubles as a ceiling below the deck. Seems straight forward enough. I would personally have trimmed out the framing members under the deck with cedar etc.. for a more finished look. See link and go to gallery for pics. Well I guess I cant post a web site because I'm still a newbie. So the company is Wahoo decks and the product is Dry Joist Thanks for any info y'all might have. |

Re: Dry Joist Deck System
There are two basic types of systems, those that are below the joists and double as a ceiling, and those that hang on top of the joists and you provide the ceiling. For the on top of the joists type, you have more flexibility to add can lights and fans; can do any ceiling that fits the decor; and you might get some benefit from the joists being protected from the weather. Rain Escape is a top-of-joist system I have used with good results.

Re: Dry Joist Deck System
Marty,
This system actually sits on top of the deck joists. The bottom of the system is actually visible from below the deck. The part that actually sits on the joists is finished aluminum that acts as the ceiling as well as support for the decking above. The product is structural so you don't need nearly as many joists. Since I can't put a url to link to, because I don't have 15 posts, just search WahooDecks and the product is DryJoist. They have a diagram on the site. Looks to be a pretty neat system though I'm sure it is pricey.

Re: Dry Joist Deck System
Personally I think any of those "on top of joist" systems are a crap shoot. Sooner or later they're going to leak then you have to deal with taking off the decking to fix it, no thanks. Either conventional frame it then the torch down roof/deck above or if the deck is all ready built then use metal roofing under the deck. I'd bet good $ either of those will outlast any "on top of joist" system.

Re: Dry Joist Deck System
I appreciate all of your imput. At the risk of being abused unmercilessly, what is the actual method to doing a torch down deck application?
