Oh yes. The finished product looks fantastic. Lots of work, but incredible in the hands of a skilled carpenter

Re: Do We Like

As a wood maintenance & restoration company - YES, YES, YES! It is some of the most beautiful wood - it lasts and lasts and lasts. There's no squirrelly behavior like with the softer woods. Granted, it is more labor intensive to use, but the results are immediately and incredibly gratifying - I would expect that a builder would see that as well

Re: Do We Like

The John<< has been puting down ipe for 10 years it is hands down,no contest, toss in the white towel in the first round, the best decking know to man. For good reason its geting a little spendy right now. Do it one time with this material/ the right install, The Wallet will have his/her grand chillens past it on to their kids. J.

Re: Do We Like

Been thinking about it. Since it would be for my own house and I only want to do it once, would the pro's suggest pre-grooved with hidden fasteners, or face screw every board?

I like the hidden fastners but i think if you want to screw through that decking you have to use special screws because the decking is so strong you could just break any other screw.

Re: Do We Like

Pregrooved w/ hidden fasteners would look nicer IMO. Use glue on the joists when you put it down and I would strongly recommend AGAINST using Eb-Ty clips. They were flimsy to the touch and screw heads would pull right through them - not a solid fastener at all.

Not so much special screws but you will need to predrill all the screw holes. If the screw heads will be left exposed, I'd suggest SS and a template to make sure your screw line pattern looks perfect.

If you're plugging each hole, I'd still use a template so the plugs are in a perfect line. Any ACQ approved #10 screw should do fine (I like FastenMaster GuardDogs myself).

When you're finished with it, talk with Pressure Pros (on this forum). He's got a nice system for cleaning/staining the Ipe.

Re: Do We Like

Finley,

Nice looking close-up -

Did you have to sand out the scratches or does the Penofin fill them in or cover them? Any other prep work from before pic to after? Cleaning, brightening, etc... I've never used that product.

Mac

PS - the before pic is what your deck looked like a year after applying the Penofin?

Re: Do We Like

Few, if any, stains will last up to a year on Ipe, definitely not longer. Ken's product WoodZotic and the product we use regularly Wood Tux have both outperformed Penofin, Messmers and Australian Timber Oil easily. Last year we applied FloodPro Supreme Performance on this dock - we'll be visiting in November for the one year "how's it holding up" test. Flood says it'll be good for TWO years

Re: Do We Like

With Ipe I never use the clips. When the Wallet wants the no fastener showing look I install T&G material.

All the S American lumber demands cross ventalation, there are a lot of ways to provide this,It is very important X 100. John

Re: Do We Like

Thanks for the link. I know how to attach and upload pics. My "Manage Attachments" did nothing - just sat there like a bump.

The little red x that is showing now is my other attempt to link to my pic via photobucket.
