Design For Deck?(crappy Picture Drawing Included).

I'm building a deck. For the support i was going to bolt one side to the house and then come over 2 feet and put a beam and then come 1 feet over from the other side and stick a beam. The beam would be 12 feet long(like the deck). Can i bolt a 2X12 to each side of a 4X4 post? Is that strong enough to have 2 of those running the length of the deck. I can stick a 4X4 every 3 feet so there will be 4 of them bolted to the 2X12's. I want to sandwich the 4X4's.

There is a solid concrete slab under part of where the deck will be. I was planning on using those square/triangular concrete posts holders.

Is this a good design for a deck. If the beams are strong enough, what size joists do i need? I will use joists hangers and 3" deck screw with the joists being 16" on center.

Crappy drawing, not to scale. The red things are beams and the black box is where the steps will go(will add extra support posts there).

Where do you live? Most counties will no longer let you "sandwich" the post with a separated beam. They want two 2x whatevers nailed together and bearing ON the post. If your ledger attachment to the house is a good solid attatchment then the beam close to the house is unnecessary. Around here you could get away with a double 2 x 10 beam and 2 x 6 joists. But they also want you to use 6 x 6 post. SO.. two six by six posts with a double 2 x 12 beam would span your 12', then 8' 2x 6 joists.

You should hire a profesional deck builder.

If you want I can design it but it costs money.

Private piece of land, around here i can do it myself, no problem with legalities. I already have the rough design, just need to know if the way im building it is strong enough.

What if i was to nail a

2X12 = 2X8 = piece of 1/2 ply wood = 2 X 8 = 2 X12

Then sit that over the 4X4 posts, bolt, screw, bracket where needed

When building a deck using a ledger you need to have pilings dug below frost line. Setting your posts on top of a slab is not a good idea. If you change your design to NOT use a ledger and make it free standing it is OK. You don't mention where this is or what you plan on using (IE: "Plywood"??) so you must not really know what your doing. No offense intended just safety for you and whoever else stands on the deck.

I love it when people think that just because they dont have building codes to follow they can build things like idiots. Then they wonder why it falls over and kills someone.

I have seen this many times before "I dont need to follow code" Well that just dumb.... Guess what I never build to code, I think the code is lacking so I always build above code.

Every house is resold at some time.

Even if it survives a DIY design and no code inspections, the ability and value will be less in the future.

If the area is ever under a code, you could have bigger problems because it could not be modified unless the entire deck is up to code. Codes are designed to protect the future owners also.

We just had a local deck go down with 15 people on it. Try to get your insurance company to back you up with a non-standard deck.

I am curious to why you are putting a beam 2 feet from a bolted on ledger. If I have not mis-read your design, that beam would be redundant and even create stress on the leger during weather changes.. not a good thing.
