Deck Over Empty Swimming Pool

I have a customer that has had major problems (city code violations, maintenance and upkeep costs, tenant complaints, etc) with an indoor basement swimming pool located in a 15 unit apartment building.
He wants us to build some kind of a simple wood platform or deck over the pool opening so he can use the new floor for tenant storage units. He does not want to use the empty pool area beneath the deck for anything so installing access to that area isn't necessary.
The pool will be emptied of course, and all pumps, pipes & electrical connections disconnected. Its relatively small in size (I will have the exact dimensions tomorrow). Does anyone see where there could be problems with this? Thanks for any input.

You'll probably need to drill holes through the existing pool floor to get your footings on bearing soil, that, or use beams that have been engineered to span the pool w/ no intermediate supports. With that option, you'll need to make sure the concrete next to the pool can handle the point loads of the beam ends.
Plan for a lot of weight if it's going to be used as storage...

Find a demolition job and toss the debris in the pool before you build the platform.

I seem to remember some codes about "decommissioning" pools, don't know what, there are several pool guys here, hopefully they see the post or maybe you can contact them.

under the deck

Re: Deck Over Empty Swimming Pool

We did a remodel once where a lady didn't want her pool which was under the garage. They had it filled in with gravel and then poured concrete over it. Only problem I see with just building the deck over an empty pool is that water will probably find its way in there which could be a mold concern maybe?

Don't forget to install the light at the far end of the pool before you close the lid

Re: Deck Over Empty Swimming Pool

1) Are there fire sprinklers in the area? If so, the area under the deck will have to be sprinklered

2) Is wood construction allowed in this building? Or is the building of another construction type

3) What will be the floor loading?

Alternately, saw cut out the bottom for drainage. Fill it with CDF or gravel, and pour a slab onto of it
