Deck Ledger Question

I am rebuilding a deck, the joist hangers for the old deck were attatched directly to the house rim joist is (no ledger / no sheathing), this was done by a builder in the 70's...

Fortunatly I dont see any rot, The house siding is 5/8 T1-11.

I have never seen this type of deck / house attatchment, Should I sheath over the rim joist before I attatch a ledger (10 inch strip of plywood)? or should i run ice and water over the rim, flash and attatch my ledger directly to the rim joist (without sheathing)?

I hope that makes sense to someone else... Thanks in advance

Mike

Re: Deck Ledger Question

I've seen it done that way, except that the sheathing still covers the rim joist.

You need to get flashing up under the sheathing and building paper above the new ledger, with a kickout to wrap over the ledger. Flashing behind the bottom of the ledger, kicking out over the siding. Then water shield over this bottom flashing and under the upper flashing.

Hope that makes sense.

Re: Deck Ledger Question

I would tear it all down and redo it the right way. this way you know what you are dealing with. but your 10" piece of sheating on then attach your ledger into the joyce of the house. make sure you are going into the joyce and not the rim joyce.

Re: Deck Ledger Question

If the rim joist is flush with the back
of the siding, no sheathing.
If the old sheathing would have
continued down past the joist,
then I'd fill in the sheathing.

I've gotten past that one.
I'm still trying to figure out
why no one makes a distinction
between a rim joist and a
boxing board.
Leaves me confused....

Re: Deck Ledger Question

I dont see any problem with leaving out the sheathing. Hell I think its better really. There were no signs of problems after years of service. You could ice shield and rehang on the rim again probably with out an additional ledger. Even if you add a another ledger without the sheathing you create a larger offset of water from the house. Just make sure new flashing is behing the siding.

I agree your scenario would be better, but only if the rim is flush with the sheathing.

What's a "joyce"? I'm new to this.

Re: Deck Ledger Question

Did Jon Mon get a new User name?

Why would you put a 10" strip of sheathing back up? If it is flashed properly, the ledger and weather proofing is just as good, with or without the sheathing. That strip of sheathing has just become a spacer or gap filler. All of the correct flashing procedures will be required regardless.
