Re: Deck Ideas

Nice. These two details really show the care taken, and keep this deck from being otherwise ordinary:

Re: Deck Ideas

They look great... except one little pet peeve of mine ALWAYS remove the little tags at the end of the lumber. I know you think they will fall off in no time but you will be suprised how long they hang around sometimes. Not as big of a deal on a smaller cheaper deck, but I have seen them on $15,000 composites before (one I had to fix for a competitor ) I do have to agree with MD about what he pointed out little things like that jazz it up nice. And I like on the horizontal "pipe rails" that you still have wood at the top that you can lean on or set a drink on. Most of the times I see this type of rail there is no wood at the top.

Ditto. It drives me nuts when I see them left on. My guys know better too.

I like the way you finished off the pipe railing too. I'm not a fan of that type of railing, just my personal preference.

Re: Deck Ideas

Hey Gunn how did you like working with the E_on decking? Expansion/contraction almost doubles that of composite. I have done a few of these decks and have no love for the product. e-on even has their own website for problem solving. Slotting the cladding, 1/2" gaps, stupid t-clips, and one job I went back to a few months later and it was all scratched up, I didn't even take pictures of the jobs because I don't want to give customers a bad idea....

Muy sexy but I have to ask who is going to polish the copper?? When I was 16 I worked in a restaurant with too much copper decor and I hate polishing copper but I know how to do it. Is there something new that I don't know about??

Re: Deck Ideas

Not trying to pick but i don't see the 4" rule on Bob's deck or the 1-1/4" continuous handrail rule on gunns deck. It's been a while since I've done one and I worked under the UBC so maybe things are different. Very good workmanship in the above pics.

Re: Deck Ideas

Rob53, I have noticed the lacking of a 1 1/4" graspable handrail on a lot of decks from differant areas of the country. I think it might be a more local thing here. I know some inspectors will let you get by with a 2x4 or 2x6 on edge and some want a finger groove routered into it. And around here the eon deck and Bobs deck would not pass final a 36"x36" level flat landing required at the bottom of stairs period. I had one that the homies wanted a second set of stairs to just go down into the gravel for the dog and there was a slight slope to it maybe 3/4" of slope across the stairs and when he came for my frame inspection he told me to level that out better before my final. Plus the < 3/8" variation on stair treads is another thing they are REAL picky about.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by 4" rule. The space between the cable/baulusters???

Re: Deck Ideas

I hate to pick on your work more but once again maybe a regional thing but where I have circled around here they would not allow that > 4" gap I have to use fascia at the slope so I dont have that. See other pic and the last pic is the "graspable handrail" that Rob53 and I were talking about.

Around these parts where you circled on the stair tread, a six" shere cannot pass through, and bauluster spacing is 4"....

Re: Deck Ideas

The handrail rule was in the UBC but like Robert said, the UBC is not adopted by all regions. But then we just changed to the International code but I havn't bought the book yet. I think they change those codes so they can get kickbacks from the book companies kinda like the college profs do.

The Baby Boomers are getting old and we want nice handrails when we're out partying.

Re: Deck Ideas

The IRC is 4" sphere for ballusters, and 6" sphere for under the railing at the stairs.

Re: Deck Ideas

I see... we just switched over to the IRC in november of 2005 they were supposed to switch to it december of 2004 they are just slow around here. But as far as I know around here is that whatever the inspector says he wants to see is law. I guess if you really wanted to fight it you could and probably win but then you have to deal with the guy you made mad all the time. And that is no fun.

No, I was just confused at to what you thought the 4" rule was. That picture it's hard to tell, the spacing is 2 1/2" because cable rail can stretch to 4". It's all confusing here in Wisconsin anyways. Every city can adapt their own codes so there are many variations within our own state. I was on a deck up north that overhung a 2"x6" deck board past the perimeter board by 1 foot.....
