Deck I Just Finished.

Well I just finished another deck and thought I would take the critiscim from other people on here. Down here in Alabama it is all treated SYP. The deck is 10x20 and per the home owner request it is 2x6 flooring. One compliant by the customer when we were packing up yesterday, "it is too big!!" Have not heard that yet. It is nothing like Greg, Mac, Neo or anybody else builds, but hey I think it looks good. And yes that is 1x6 for pickets on the handrails to match the deck above it. And yes we did remove the tags from the steps treads. Well anyway here it is:

One question, that gap at the bottom of the railing looks huge. Here it can't be more then 4", anywhere within the railing.

Looks nice on that house.
We would have problems with that
stair rail here as well.
I'm guessing your requirements are
a little different there.
If you don't already have it,
you might want to study this.

Nothing wrong with building
above your requirements.

It's got open risers as well that look like they exceed IRC, but I'm guessing he's in an area where the Government isn't dictating safety.

Looks good.

I dont know where KES is but he's right about treated syp. Its all we use. You have to go into the high end neighbor hoods of B-ham, Montgomery or Tuscaloosa to find anything else. And even there 50% will still be syp.
You guys are right too. That deck is probably in a rule area that dont enforce the ibc. Even if someone got hurt the down home southern peolpe that own that cabin are probably not sue happy and would take responsability for their own clumbsyness. I would.
Looks good to me KES.

First yes the gap at the bottam is greater than 4" it is 6". Per the homeowner. They think that leaves will get stuck if it is lower. - The deck is in the shade all day long.

Second it is 50 miles from no where. It is so far out that no city will claim it and I tried to get a permit in two cities for it and it is in rural Alabama.

It was one that you make sure you have extra lumber because the lumber yard is 62 miles away.

Re: Deck I Just Finished.

The stairs were designed to go off the end on the left and build a stone walk to connect to the other sidewalk. When we started the stairs, the homeowner did not like the idea. No problem with it when we started, but they wanted it changed. So we change it. I do not like how the stairs turned out, but the HO is pleased.

Got to love that - its in the county = no permits no codes & good luck figuring out which cities require a permit, or tax license...

As an FYI - if you are a licensed builder you can get dinged by the HBLB for not following the codes by them if someone complains or gets injured. Even if your not licensed, if someone gets injured watch out for the Insurance Companies coming after you to recoup costs. In this case yours wont cover it for failing to build to code. It costs me jobs occasionally but I won't build it - if it does not meet codes at a minimum. Just my .02

I figured as much from the photo. It blends good. Clean. Nice work. I have an issue where the posts meet the grade. I have fixed a ton of decks/fencing because there is no standoff, or the concrete is lower than grade. What happens is the posts will rot at ground level. You will have a good 10 years though before it happens. Just my nickles worth of free advice.

Those treated 4x4's & 4x6's will last just fine, the rest of the deck will be ready to be *****canned by the time those rot.

Looks like a nice rural Al. deck to me.

Re: Deck I Just Finished.

yep the post will be there as long as the rest of the deck. Around here ive never seen a post sitting on a standoff. Most small decks or even barns and tall decks put the post IN the ground sometimes with crete sometimes not. I for one dont like the look of that concrete sticking out the ground.

Re: Deck I Just Finished.

Inspector, permit or not...I worry about obvious injury hazards like the sweep space already mentioned and you have open risers on the stairs. No longer allowed. Both are for child protection. Time and time again I point these out to the client, they're on the hook too, especially for children. I'll only go so far in these areas. I know there are a zillion hacks out there that could care less, can't figure it out or don't have a pot to pee in.

One personal injury claim and my GL insurance will go from $1K / yr to $5 - 10k a year effectively putting me out of business.

What are your concerns about keeping your GL sane ?
