Deck Height Over Concrete

I have a question, TT website says to have the decking if used on 2x4's over concrete they need to be at least 12" however this guy keeps telling me that 3" should be fine.
Will there be any problems with installing 3" above the concrete or will there be too many problems with the board warping and contracting expanding too much.

Oh I forgot to metion this will be composite decking.

Thanks,
Richard

TT is composite, they require more than 3'' by a long shot. J.

If you are using TT florizon then you need 12" at a minimum. If your using something else you will have to look because they are all different.

How about if I am using NewTech I can't find it on their website so what should the default be? It is a composite. I just don't want to keep do something that the customer says and then have him complain to me later.

How long do you think the treated 2x4s will last without any real ventilation in your climate? If you have the best decking available, you still have a throw-away deck in a few years.

It is always possible to install cross ventalation under any project. Sometimes it has to be very creative. J.

If you can change the kind of composite you are using, that new tech stuff sucks. The boards don't look too bad, but it contracts/expands more than any composite I've ever used & I've used a bunch. I didn't like their hidden fastener either, the screws stripped out easily. No way even consider using their handrails, total crap.

Re: Deck Height Over Concrete

I used NewTech brand decking on 2 decks last year, and I had no problems with it. My customer brought it to my attention. She bought it herself. Then her neighbor bought it. Both Walnut color. I went back to do some stone work a couple weeks ago and has not faded much at all. The t clips hidden fasteners worked well for me. I would use it again, but not sure where to get it.

They don't have any dealers, they sell it at Home Shows. Their warehouse is in the Houston area. Without distributors or dealers I doubt they can sustain enough business to stay in business, but I could be wrong as I've been known to be before.

Good to hear it worked out for you, my customer was happy with it also. I just didn't like the huge gaps that developed at the butt joints.
