Deck Built Despite The Snow!

You can't tell from the finished pictures but here's a deck that I built despite having to clean off snow almost every morning I was on site. I even had to shovel it off the lawn a few times so we weren't standing in the snow all day. I even had to shovel about a foot of snow to dig the footings.

This job came along unexpectedly at this time of year. Nice to have the bank account padded a little before Christmas - I'm actually giving myself a bonus this year

That's a beauty!
I like the railings, ads a nice delicate touch and offsets the wood nicely.
Sometimes I wish I could do a day's work in the snow. Just don't get the opportunity where I am.

Yes, working in the snow and freezing temperatures is a real treat, you're missing out, time to move up north.

Yeah, I'd really hate not having any snow and having to deal with being able to golf 365 days a year

It's not the snow, it's that top
¼" of thawed mud over frozen
mud that's the real treat!

Looks good. That hot tub outside sure looks convenient, they won't even have to use a towel. Just shake the ice off before they run in the door.

That was the whole idea around the step down to the lower level. The hottub was installed a few weeks before I started the job.

I lived in Chicago for a few years, in Lincoln Park.
Come to think of it, I don't miss the winter all THAT much. Or "The Hawk". As I recall, that's how the locals referred to the icy wind in the winter.

Great looking project. Looks like from the photo we do alot of things similar.
Hey by the way the snow keeps the frost out of the concrete, and as long as your lumber isn't frozen the finish product turns out better. The lumber cures slower and the that's a very good thing

Most experts do build similarily

Completely agree - it's just that the working conditions aren't exactly ideal...

I dug and poured the footings on a Thursday morning then to help the footings cure, I put straw over each footing, covered it with plastic and then piled snow on top of the plastic. Then I let it cure over the weekend and started building on Monday - no problems.

The other thing I do when building a deck at this time of year is to leave the steps until the absolute last possible day to minimize us walking on them and the deck with mud covered boots.

Yo Terry...Do you ever give a thought to Cross Ventalation??

Screen vents in that skirting would make a big differance to the life of that decking. J.

Reminds me why I moved away from Ohio. Ah the memories of sweeping snow from a roof so my uncle could lay the next shingle.

BTW, nice looking job.

They're there John. One is behind the small stairs close to the house and the other is between the part between the hottub and the house.

Re: Deck Built Despite The Snow!

Gotsha, I am just freak on that would have put probley 2 in frount.

It all started when I got into ipe years ago they stocked me up with all sorts of stuff including a video showning a really cool ipe deck all sorts of detail including raised pannel skirting. Not Kidding it looked like a court house.....on mushrooms

No Ventalation at all very tight joints, the thing had warped/twisted so Bad..How Bad Was It??? Frank Zappa would have been grossed out!!! John Mon

We do the same thing only differences we build the stairs and the carpenter that goes up there the other guy cleans his shoes off. another thing you can do is re-use the hay by spreading it around on the wet or muddy areas to keep the mud from getting all over in the first place
