Custom Propane Tank Enclosure - Basics Ideas/drawings
I have a two sets of propane tanks to enclose, I think will be done with treated.
Each will enclose (2) tanks approx 4' high and 15" w. Not something you see everyday. But the tanks and lines spear the eyes on this upscale home. Wanting an architectural flavor, I'm juggling ideas on how to finish it out. Assuming posts are treated 4x4's not attached to lap siding, which is cement board (and unshingled top) I'd like to use an alternating pattern of maybe 1x1's. This wil help keep it vented. With a hinged door for access. Any ideas more specific - I would appreciate. [although (1) enclosure is right on top of the untitilies, dense with spaghetti wiring just below ground - electric/utilities/phone/cable - all in that 2.5' common span --- I guess I'll have it marked and...! Have to footer it so it doesn't heave, in Ohio, unless someone has better ideas] |

Re: Custom Propane Tank Enclosure - Basics Ideas/drawings
So pics you have.
What I left out obviously is that (1) set is at a right angle to house while the other is parallel. For space reasons, I believe the one with the ultilities has to stay this way with the meter left open. The ones parallel - propane line just runs at ground level. Right angle tranks - line is at that awkard spot.Tree obstruction is entirely in the foreground, it appears nearer to the tanks than it actually is. Last edited by artinall; 09-09-2007 at 02:39 PM. |

Propane bottles against the house? That's a no-no around here.

I think if they are small enough it is allowed. Not sure though. Going from memory when I was a kid & we had some put in. Still doesn't look safe to me. They aren't even setting level.
I was just thinking of an idea for a privacy screen that has 1x4 or whatever at an angle. So when you're looking straight on it's solid, but at 45° or 30° to the side, you can see through. No roof, or shingle it to match house. |

Danno,
Tanks will be leveled before its done. You alternate 1x4's on either side? Mounted to 2x4 top and bottom to provide the gap? Open dog eared? Capped maybe? Don't know about capping it maybe with a 1x6. But if the cap is angled ~ 20 degrees or so might look better. Then again a prominent cap like that might imply rails below, instead of the vertical. Also, don't have a table saw right now to do any ripping so need to be sticking with dimensional pieces. One thing I forgot to mention is that there is a 2nd story deck overlooking it, so you can see down in it. Last edited by artinall; 09-11-2007 at 02:29 PM. |

They are usually allowed against the house no problem as long as there is not a window directly above the tank because when it gets hot the tanks can let out some gas. Make sure that this enclosure is easy to open to remove the tanks, A lot of times the companies will opt to switch out the tanks rather than fill them with a tanker

Re: Custom Propane Tank Enclosure - Basics Ideas/drawings
Decided to move the one set of tanks away from the utilities.
(left of the window you see in the picture) It will now be between (2) casement windows, so both sets of tanks will sit in the same direction, side by side, parallel to the home. Both enclosures will be the same. |
