Combo?

What's your favorite combo with trex (any composite)?

Guys at the yard are doing Trex Decking and horizontal top rail, with cedar rails and skirting.

I have not done it, but I think I would rather use PT with the Trex, the ACQ seems to hold up a bit better than Cedar and you could stain it cedar later.
I bought my house with a pt deck with a light stain, looks OK.
I personally like Deckorators with Trex Horizontal top rail on top of cedar.

Anyone tried bending stock around the rimmer instead of the $6 l/f trex fascia?

Anyone have any good combo pics?

It just seems wrong to mix composite with PT, but if you guys got some good ideas, Id consider..

Stock? You mean aluminum? Only if it's on a mobile home.....
Seriously, Veka makes a good 7/16 x 12 fascia, the white starts around $2.80/lf.

Re: Combo?

I saw a detail for vinyl stock in a book.
I was thinking possibly tan, in between the railposts. Just bouncin' ideas..

Re: Combo?

I'll do complimentary color combos with composite boards but I very rarely (maybe once?) mix composite w/ visible wood (i.e. decking/handrail/stairs). There have been a couple of clients who opted to leave off the composite fascia to save a few dollars, though.

Folks who want a composite deck want an all-composite deck so they don't have to worry about staining or splinters from any part of it.

Visually, I don't see it working out too well either...

Re: Combo?

The only time I'll use wood with a composite deck is for the railing, like a composite deck with ipe rails. On a redwood colored composite deck I used redwood 4x4's & 2x4's along with deckorator balusters for rails. I hate composite rail systems plus they are costly.

What is it that you hate about them? And when you say them, do you mean all systems in general or specific brands/types?

Re: Combo?

Just wondering if you saw the house that "Ask This Old House" did there in Austin with the 5 star energy compliance.

The composite rails are pretty pricey when you look at the 4x4's. If you have 20 or 30 of them compared to a cedar post the cost is vastly different. For the most part people want a bigger "live-able" deck without going to far into 5 digits. sometimes the difference in the labor and material with doing a non composite rail system is the breaking point.

Have you seen those plugs and new trapeez screws fasten master has this year. They are pretty slick.

I don't think you can build a composite deck and rail system without going into 5 digits. Really.

Re: Combo?

I wont use trex anything for a lot of reasons. For an econ deal like it sounds like your looking for the $ would be right with 5/4 pt decking and garapa or masenranduba rail with alum balusters.

There are very few choices for an inbetween high grade project and the bottom end trailor house over in the flats deal. J.

Re: Combo?

my fav. combo with composite decking is cedar. this my be because i usually mill every piece of railing except the ballastars and its easier to work. I hate ripping, beveling, and routing P.T. esp. really wet stuff.

cheers,
hsquared
