Coil Nailer Or Framing Nailer For Deck Building

I want to know which is better. I am currently running a DeWalt 200 max PSI air compressor with a DeWalt Framing nailer. Also i am using a Paslode cordless framing nailer. I want to buy another corded nailer, but i don't know which would be better a coil nailer or another framing nailer. Thanks in advance.

My stick nailer just went to the doctor, so I got a coil nailer. The stick is real useful when you are changing nail size back and forth a lot, but when you're simply framing, or sheathing, the coil is the way to go. One of each works for me.

Re: Coil Nailer Or Framing Nailer For Deck Building

Neither - a good quality screw gun or impact drill is the way to go on decks.

You've got two framing nailers already - why the desire for a third?

Coil nailers kick out little pieces of wire which, if left on wood decking, will rust and stain the wood. Also, I don't think coil nailers can shoot 3" nails.

One problem with nailing decks down (besides nail pops, creaky boards and stubbed toes) is that there isn't a collated strip nail out there that is coated to prevent being eaten by pressure treated wood. There are galvanized nails but it's a plated coating. Double hot dipped nails don't work in guns because of the extra galv. coating would gum up the gun.

You could always buy a Teco gun (positive placement nailer). That would work just fine with your current compressor set up. Those are really nice for nailing off all the hardware on your deck's structural framing.

I totally agree with that staement. I prefer my Bosch 18V impactor. But my guys like to nail the treads. They like the sticks, but think the coiler may be faster. I also use the Senco dura spin with decking screws but the screws always fly out and hit someone in the eye.

OK, I understand. I didn't know speed was your most important consideration.

hitatchi makes a coil nailer that shoots up to 3 1/2" nails. It rocks, never ever go back to stick nailers, forever reloading

Mac,

All coil framing nailers shoot 3" nails.

Good to know, I've never actually used one - I've just seen guys using them for siding and roofing (neither of which would require a 3" nail). I made an assumption (making an ass out of "u" and "mption"! Any movie heads out there remember that one?)

Thanks for the info,

Mac

Mac, in our area, folks don't frame with coil guns, everyone (well, most) uses stick guns. We use a smaller coil gun for siding, sheathing, etc. Also, I agree, don't build a deck with a nail gun. The recent code/materials change won't allow it. A gun shot deck won't last due to the acq.

Re: Coil Nailer Or Framing Nailer For Deck Building

a framing nailer, yes. a siding nailer, I don't think so. I think framing nailers will go at least 12d's if not 16 d's. siding nailers go to 2 1/2"

I will stick to my stick nails only because of the speed reloading time. Sure it takes more, but I can fit a ****load in my bags without damaging them. I can reload in a blink.I've got nothing bad to say about coil nailers though. They have definitely more capacity than sticks. It's a preference thing I got used to.

What if you are using stainless steel nails?

Re: Coil Nailer Or Framing Nailer For Deck Building

True enough, my mistake, SS works fine... I'm able to order them from my supplier. Expensive! I usually hand nail deck framing with hot dip 16's. Old school, but rock solid and rewarding for those who like to swing a hammer. Also, I tend to think the hot dips hold better, they're awful grippy. SS is pretty slick.

Re: Coil Nailer Or Framing Nailer For Deck Building

I have a Bostich coil nailer it goes up to 3 1/2". I like it because of reloading. only for the framing though. I never use it on the decking. Because of the wire and screws are better for that anyway. A big thing I find is, the coil gun is more compact to fit between bays. If you already have a stick nailer get a coil gun. I also recently got a Bostich Strap Shot for the hangers. It cut my time at least in half(for the hangers) 48 hangers in about half hour (and yes I filled every hole) and didn't hit my d@mn fingers once.

Samuel Jackson, I think in The Long Kiss Goodnight, possibly Pulp Fiction.

The Great Lebowski is another great show, though!

Re: Coil Nailer Or Framing Nailer For Deck Building

I'm sorry, we glue and screw all our frames of the deck/handicap ramp. The only reaon i would use the nailer is for nailing down the treads. I am looking for a good alternative to hammering and screwing all the 5/4 treads.
