Clip Or Face Screw Ipe?

Just wondering about the strength of the ipe clip to prevent cupping?

Also, can you see them in the gaps?

What about pre-drilling, screwing and plugging?

Gluing?

This is for a 100 sq ft covered porch, 30 inches about grade with ventilation.

Chris,

I find it best to do the following for Ipe decks:

- face screw and plug the first row where it is over the ledger
- use the Ipe clips (make sure you drill for them first or the screws will snap off)
- the Ipe clips are barely noticable between the boards and they help with spacing the boards evenly
- use PL premium on all the joists before you put the boards down (also, make sure you pick the side you want showing as you can't turn the board over after it's touched the PL premium )
- Pre-drilling, screwing and plugging is VERY time consuming - if you do do this, make sure you add for the extra labour when pricing it

It isn't the best picture but here's the one I did late last fall in Toronto. If you want the address, so you can go and see it, PM me as I'm sure the owner would let you drop by and have a look (it's near Avenue Rd. and Eglinton).

Re: Clip Or Face Screw Ipe?

I've done it all ways (ipe clips, face screwing, and plugs), I've setteled on Headcote SS screws with no plugs.

I didn't like the way the clips held the boards, too much movement, even with the adhesive. The plugs are just too labor intensive and my clients have been fine with the colored trim screws.

I would also suggest using the headcoat screws as opposed to using clips or plugging. It saves a lot of time compared to plugging & is much better at holding the decking in place than clips. We have too much change in temps to use clips here, it gets so hot & dry during summer the boards shrink to the point the clip is bearly in the slot & then does not have the holding strength to keep the boards from cupping.

Re: Clip Or Face Screw Ipe?

Yes, you can see them in the gaps and on some decks they are pretty obvious. We just finished a large multilevel Cumuru deck using them and 2 weeks later I'm real unhappy with the way they've held and the way they look. I've used them before with no problems but this was the last time I'll use them. I'm switching to Tiger Claw TC-G since they are heavier, black rather then brown and screw straight down rather than at a 45 degree angle. Cost is about the same.
