Class 1 (or A) Fire Rated Decking

Anybody out there see a specific need for a product like this? Specifically, I am talking about a Class 1 (or A) Fire Rated composite decking material. I would think there is a niche market for something like this. I've been asked about it but I dont seem to have a good answer. Is it available? Is it needed? Would the fire rating be a good selling point? I would expect the Colorado boys to be all over something like this. Thoughts?

Re: Class 1 (or A) Fire Rated Decking

The only Class 1-A fire rated COMPOSITE decking I know of is called AmeriDeck. I think its only available in the Western US, made somewhere in WA. I've been asked about it before too and that is the info I came up with. You can buy Cedar decking that is pressure treated to meet Class 1-A but this stuff is hard as heck to get your hands on and spendy as all get out. I see this becoming more of an issue, especially after the fire season we are having in Souther Oregon.

Well I am from Colorado and know of no such thing. But I did have a customer tell me he would redo his deck when one he liked came out (I just refinshed his deck). I am sure I will get a call from him when it does come out.

Forgot this one too, a fire treated exterior rated stock ..

"Invented to reduce flamespread and smoke development, FRX® wood provides tested fire protection for applications directly exposed to weather; it may be substituted for materials classified as non-combustible in certain building types designated by the model building codes and requiring ASTM D2898 conformance."

Some Brazilian hardwood decking has a Class A / 1 fire rating (same as concrete). Looks better than composite, lasts longer and often costs less.

TimberSIL is Class A fire rated and much cheaper than any composite out in the market that I can find. They have a dealer in the Denver, Co. Area. Their Number is 303-289-5727, name of the company I think is Shake and Shingle suuply. TimberSIL is a processed wood product that is a barrier to rot, decay, and insects and also is Fire rated. I think it runs about $2.00 per lineal foot in 5/4 x 6. Also, they produce normal dimensional lumber for Substructure. timbersilwood.com

While we are on the topic...

We responded to a structure fire this Sunday AM at about 6:15. Big McMansion that appears to be rocking when we pull up. Blackest, smelliest smoke I've ever seen.

The deck was on fire!

TimberTech gray twinfinish with RDI Endurance rails. The heat was so intense, the aluminum inserts in the RDI disintegrated. The TT burned to no end, but because it's so dense, it was still pretty rigid. The framing did not burn through, but the rim joists were glowing when I poked at them with a pike pole.

Turns out the HO had a big party the night before and someone put a citronella candle inside a rented porta-potty which was next to the bottom flight of stairs to the deck. The porta-potty melted ONTO the TT deck while on fire and the TT ran up the zigzag staircase like a fuse on a bomb.

The fire was ripping so hard that all of the siding (vinyl) was gone and the flames broke 2nd story windows and started to roll inside the house.

What a mess. I didn't have a camera on me. I'll see if I can find some pics on the web of it.

It was cool to see since it was material I work with all time.

Re: Class 1 (or A) Fire Rated Decking

I used Ameradeck on several decks, good stuff besides having the fire rating. It's all made in China now, no longer made in Wa. state. Check their website, ameradeck.com, they use to have a link to TV station video where someone's house caught on fire & the deck saved the folks life. Several lumberyards on the west coast sell it as does Austin Wholesale Decking here in Texas. Some areas of Ca. require fire rated decking because of the wildfire problems there. Cost 2.29 per lf here.

When I lived out in the country I burned a lot of my scraps, those composites burn hotter & longer than wood for sure. Burned a lot of ipe scraps too, that stuff really burns hot.

The roofing company that made boardwalk shut down their composite plant so it's no longer available.

I was going too until I found out/realized he was a big paper contractor. Pretty much the type of client I avoid. They had wood 6x6 posts for the railing posts unsleeved with RDI Endurance rail sections. The fascia was trim coil. Total ghetto job if I ever saw one. Most likely one of his low-rent crews did the work and he didn't even know any better....

Thats a bad deal Greg,it only takes one little mistake while in party mode.

The S American lumber will defentley burn it just takes longer for it to do it, the stuff wont flame until its mostly charcole then it goes all at the same time. Ipe is one of the few materials approved for the high fire risk areas of S Call. J.
