Center A Post

I think I made a mistake, I am just not sure if I really did, and what would be the best way to correct it.

I cut a stringer for a deck, with six treads between the bottom tread, and the upper landing. So now I cant center a post.

The decking is timberteck, and the rail system comes is 6' lengths from what I am told. I am not the seller/buyer on this job, just the installer.

I dont think an 'off-center' center post will look like the carpentry crime of the century, but it is tugging at my symetric nerves.

What do ya think?

Hi Vito, I can not see what one has to do with the other. Can you elaborate further? post a picture or a sketch?

Andy.

Re: Center A Post

are the stairs landing where the post should be to be centered?
not sure I follow you. you'll just have 2 short sections of rail on either side of the stairs... right?

Re: Center A Post

Are you saying your 6' railing length won't make it from the post at the top of the steps to a post at the bottom?

You aren't really painting a clear picture here.

Re: Center A Post

Why can't you center it on the third tread up? It would look better than offsetting it at the nosing. Aren't the post heights adjustable? We need more info to give recommendations.

Click the quote button

When the window opens, scroll down to "manage attachments" and click

When that opens click "browse"

when that opens click "pictures". Your photo gallery will open. Double click the photo, click "upload" then "submit reply" If the photo doesn't load, its too large and you'll have to downsize it.

Re: Center A Post

framer! its getting vinal post sleeves and bases. The thought of notching and cutting it, to center it seems like the worst of the evil.

I could do it that way if the finish material was cedar..

Re: Center A Post

What is going to happen with the grade? looks like you could turn the bottom tread into a landing and eliminate the first rise, allowing for the 6' rail to possibly work.

Re: Center A Post

There is a shadow, hiding the last tread. And the base will eventually get a bluestone or slate landing.

Re: Center A Post

I still don't see the problem. It looks like you need a post at the bottom of the stairs, and one midway up.

Re: Center A Post

Whats the real issue? Is the buyer trying to save the cost a rail section by buying 3 instead of 4? Besides I thought stair kits 6 or 8ft. I have to check ......havent done one this season yet. I forget.

Timber Tech Rail Kits available in 6' or 8' sections I don't see what is the problem there.

Re: Center A Post

If you are trying to keep the post even with the fron to of a riser then the spacing between posts will not be equal. Not the greatest crime in the world. If you are going to skirt the stairs to cover the sides of the stringers then just center the post and no one will know the difference.

Re: Center A Post

Thanks for the replys. I've never cut a stringer longer than eight feet, and I did not forsee this situation.

Now that I know how to post pics, thanks lone, I will post a pic of the finished rail.

Seems like this set up would have two treads between each set of posts...

Thanks. The rail system is up, and I am pretty cool with the look, in spite of the fact that I was unable to center that 'censored' post.
