Cedar & Pressure Treated

When I install my rails between posts I use a kreg jig for the screws to connect the rails. Screwed to post with (2) #9x3 1/2" screws from inside of the rail so when force is applied it is pushing the screw in into the post rather than trying to pull it out of the post if fastened from outside of the rail.

Bad part is it leaves a huge hole. Kreg doesn't make PT plugs, but they do make cedar. Anyone see any issues with glueing in cedar plugs into PT pine? Any other easy cost effective ideas to fill these holes? I've used the Deckorators rail brackets & really like them, but those suckers add up quick.

I don't see why there should be a problem, as long as the plugs made for exterior use, in addition cedar and PT similar in color.

Is pressure treated different down there? Up here it's green, and cedar is red. The two definitely look different to me.

I did a porch remodeling for a guy long time ago he wanted PT on the deck and cedar for the railing, here is the picture, do you think it will make much of a difference if he uses a few cedar plugs at each end of the railing? I think that look will bring out his craftsmanship, and if it was me I would charge for that extra but of-course you can leave 2 inch screw holes or drive screws right through the face of it

The MCQ is not as green as the ACQ. In fact, when I first seen it, I thought they sent out the wrong stuff.

Re: Cedar & Pressure Treated

We have the MCQ here. The cedar plugs will be a little different tone, but I think installed clean & consistent they will look nice. I was just wondering about any "galvanic" reaction stuff that might happen between the two woods, or should I say chemicals in the treated lumber & the cedar.

Looks like I'll get some on order & play a little.

Thanks!
Dan

I do that for normal screws, but these are at such a steep angle the plugs are like 2" long. I don't have a plug cutter long enough to do that.
