Question

Cable Deck Railings. Legal??

Just curious, where cable or glass deck railings are legal? Here in NJ they are a big no no.

Re: Cable Deck Railings. Legal??

Horizontal cables get the no-no from any inspector I've asked.

But tempered glass railings are fine. I've done several over the years and have never run into an issue with the towns, as long as the glass is stamped "Tempered".

Glass yes. Cables no. Cables = jail time.

National code says it's allowed.
Anyone got proof of a state code adoption that removes this option?

2006 irc I believe didn't allow it, but it's back in 2009...

Re: Cable Deck Railings. Legal??

For California I believe cable railings are allowed even though they do offer a 'ladder' which can be problematic with children, and tempered glass railings are allowed but they must have a top rail if they are over a certain height (30"?) above grade. Any sort of railing system has to meet the load requirements also.

I've never asked... I won't do it anyways so I could care less whether it's allowed here or not...

Tempered glass is fine here, last time I checked horizontal cable was ok on commercial but a no no on residential.

Re: Cable Deck Railings. Legal??

IRC 2003 didn't allow the horizontal ladder type effect and most counties enforces this code but it is up to each county to ignore or modify anything they don't like.
Glass rail or cable rail always needs a top rail if this system is approved in your county.
Glass rails that act as a windbreaker and is higher at a certain point (I believe it is 6') than you don't need a top rail.
I have two counties where they allow the cable, all others it is a no no.

Re: Cable Deck Railings. Legal??

I've only installed it on reskin jobs in NJ where there were no inspections.

The first thing I do when someone asks me about it is ask them "how old are your kids". The second thing I ask them is "are you sitting down?" LOL

I would think that one email to Feeney would give you any/all code info you need.

Re: Cable Deck Railings. Legal??

I don't think that any code could remove the legalities of cable mid-rails. Code can make things difficult by disallowing systems which can act as a horizontal ladder, and can certainly require a very taut system. But I don't think a blanket ban could be enforceable.

They're legal in Washington, I am looking at a cable railing right now. I've never heard of them being illegal, why is that?

Some jurisdictions are very concerned about laddering, and loosening. Loosening could open up the spacing from less than 4" to greater than.

Re: Cable Deck Railings. Legal??

I have people all the time say stuff like "All my kids are older, we don't have kids, our friends don't have kids, etc, etc" I always tell them that the codes are in place for the NEXT buyer as much as they are for your protection. I can be liable for a project for its life span no matter who owns the home." They usually realize it's best to use common sense for their project.

As I recall North Bend Oregon nice as it may be, is not really over filled with building inspectors so all 10,000 of you are pretty much on your own.

Re: Cable Deck Railings. Legal??

We are required to put the cable at 3 1/4" spacing vs 4"
There is nothing wrong with cable rail system. Why is commercial allowed and not residential? If I go the Grand Canyon I see kids looking down in areas where there is no railing because they can't cover everything with railing and some sections are just two horizontal rails where they stand on!!
Some common sence and we are all doing fine.
