Building A Deck Flush To The Ground

I've never built a deck so close to the ground that it didn't need footings and support posts. Now if one was to build a deck so that the decking is just a step above grade (7"), how would you do it? would you still need concrete footings, or could you dig railroad tie sleepers over crushed stone for your support?

Concrete "grade beams" w/ pt 2x4 sleepers, then joists.

12"x12"x8" concrete deck blocks w metal strap - tops of concrete just above grade (in a hole with 4" packed gravel beneath them)

Heavy duty landscape fabric under entire deck with holes cut out for top of concrete blocks

4x4 beams, 2x4 joists, no span greater than 4', blocking over beams

2x decking will round you out at just over 8" above grade, 5/4 composite would be slightly lower...

This was a little ground level Timber Tech deck I put together that way.

Something to think about from my perspective. Design as much ventilation as you can into the structure. These types of decks so close to grade do not last long (especially cedar). Finishes do not hold up and they are always mold covered. A compsoite might be best. ::cringe::

Good location for a brick or flagstone patio instead of a deck.

All good responses. Thanks. Looks nice Mac. I like the corner. Looks like a nice spot for a water feature.

Is frost heave not an issue with low level decks?
