Board And Batton Siding
A repeat customer is asking me to install sanded cdx plywood and batton strips for her exterior siding. I will prime and paint it. Anybody do this before or can anybody recomend a better solution besides cedar?

Re: Board And Batton Siding
I have seen plenty of people here in my area use chip board, dress it up with some battons and paint it. Works pretty well, lasts surprisingly well and doesn't look half bad. If that is what she wants, then go with it! Good primer and paint are what is going to save the job, in the long run. CDX will be good, since it uses an exterior "resistant" glue. Hell, it will probably last as long as cedar, albeit with paint!
My Garage/Shop is sided with nothing but 3/8 ply. Has been that way for about 10 yrs. It is in good shape, never painted and has that nice grey patina to it. The neighbor complains, but she can, well, you know! |

Re: Board And Batton Siding
Here's a house I did last year with board and batton. I used ACX and 1x2.

Re: Board And Batton Siding
Just don't put a lot of nails in the battons, It makes it easy for us vinyl siders to rip them off in a few years to side over the plywood.

Then after that, I can use a shingle shovel to rip it ALL of and start over in about 2 years when the sun bakes it into a nice crispy bacon-resembling material! ![]() ![]() Sorry, couldn't resist! |

Re: Board And Batton Siding
why not 1x12 rs , pine or cedar, with 1x2 rs covering the seams, thats traditional board and batton

Re: Board And Batton Siding
Fiber cement sheets, either smooth or wood grain with miratec or fiber cement battons. Never rots like all the real wood products do after awhile. It looks great to, and holds paint better as well as longer.

Re: Board And Batton Siding
you can't really mean CDX. ACX would be the minimum grade of ply that I would use in that situation.

Re: Board And Batton Siding
If your supplier will order it Roseburg
makes a clear fir veneer 12"oc RB&B or T-111, prettier and more stable than YP. Can be painted or semi-transparent. Seems like @ $38?
