Big And Tall, Help Needed

Looking for ideas for getting large beams up to tall decks, especially when you need to get a big beam on top of tall posts that are out away from the side of the house.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

Re: Big And Tall, Help Needed

I temp the beam up first then add the posts later. I have set some LARGE beams by myself before. I usually go back and forth on ladders or something like that.

I set (2) 3 1/2" X 14" X 20' Glulam beams by myself before But I cheated they were on my ladder rack on the truck so I just parked under the deck and shimmed them up till they were right.

I also set a double 1 3/4" X 14" X 18' ML by myself... That one was a little more tricky. One end was about 10" off grade the other end was about 7.5' off grade. I moved them 1 at a time and put them next to each other and nailed them together and flashed them. Then I got 1 end on a ladder and the other end on grade. I built some holders 16" in from the end that held it where it needed to be (2x4's in an L shape) just slide the beam into the L and add another 2x4 to make it a U then the beam cant fall off. Repeat on other end and your golden. Add your posts after the fact and make the homeowners jaw drop watching a 5'3" 130LB guy set that by himself.

Hand winches are available, that use a strap rather then a wire rope. The winch is a safe and quick way to lift walls, trusses and most anything that are too heavy for the personal on hand.
