Big Rocks

I'm doing a fence job and it looks like they used a lot of rock for fill. I can go about a foot down and then I hit rocks to big to get out. Will a electric jack hammer work to brake them up. Some are about 6'' thick.

Re: Big Rocks

It doesn't sound like that is going to be a pleasant job. I'd go back to the person who hired you and tell them what you've got going on there. I wouldn't even touch it. You don't know what's down there.

Post was big rocks, so I thought I'd bring mine in, just to see it was about.....rocks.

Re: Big Rocks

If your contract doesn't have a rock clause of some sort..or you didn't bid the job based on the possibility of rock.....suck it up and finish the job.

If you do have a rock clause..go back and mention that there will be a change order based on time...

Either way....in my experience...the electric jackhammer will work but not as well as an air hammer....

I just did a job that I knew would be rocky....we dug almost 50 holes this way..of course it was part of the bid.....

Good luck

Re: Big Rocks

If you are going to be hitting rocks all the time then get a big air hammer... If its just a few then the electrics will do alright. I own the hitachi h65 hammer for when we find rocks we just break them up and out with that. And most of the time the rocks I hit are granite so it takes a couple minutes with the electric.

Re: Big Rocks

I put the first panel up and have 7 more to go. The rocks are about 12'' or so and partly in the holes but too big to get out when deep. I gust need to chip them back from the holes. I was hoping a Elec. would work.

Re: Big Rocks

I would go with the electric... You could use the 60-80 lb range and they would work fine... If you want to be able to lift it out of the holes then the 40 LB range would still work just take a little more time.
