Big Deck Progress Photos
Here are a few photos of my current project that a few people have been asking to see. I finally took a few before it got dark tonight. The block columns are 4' below grade on poured footings and the brick matches the house. The 3 center ones will extend 4' above the deck and the 2 outside ones will be 8' above the deck. the middle section will curve from the center to the next 2 piers on either side.

I know this is slightly out of order but this is the mess I had made and had to deal with before I got to what you see above...

Re: Big Deck Progress Photos
I'm hoping so.
It's 525 sq.ft. - before the platform that will be at the mid point of the stairs that wrap from the right side back towards the second pier on the right. |

Re: Big Deck Progress Photos
That's the one Chris. The rebar will extend all the way to the top of the columns. The masons will be extending the block tomorrow and then the rest of the brick after that. I was able to pick up some really nice natural stone caps (30" x 30") for the tops at a good price ($150 each) - you can see them just to the left of the centre column in the first pic.
Nice mess huh? |

I like that rebar also. It looks like the same rebar I use instead of sch. 40 PVC conduit.

Re: Big Deck Progress Photos
Smart a$$. The conduit is there to run lighting up between the block and brick. It was an add on for the client. 1/2" was all we had room for.

Re: Big Deck Progress Photos
I will Robert. It will definitely be the largest deck in my portfolio. By the time I'm done, I'll have done all the work except for the excavation and masonry work.

Here are a couple more pics I took at the end of the day. The columns are all done except for the natural stone caps going on tomorrow morning.

FYI, the two outside columns are 13' above grade and the three middle ones are 9' above grade.

Re: Big Deck Progress Photos
I like the columns match the brick on the house. Do you plan on putting lights on top of them? I think it will be a nice looking deck. I would tell the homeowner that ivy could be problems down the road. I see it growing on right side of house. Some times it can get so agressive it will get into the walls. I do realize its a brick house. Finally i like Canada i get to YVR BC usually twice a week. Can i ask how much a home like that goes for in your country. I do realize your over in ontario. Last time i was under vacation i drove to Toronto. Detroit is like a 5 hour drive for me than its throught the tunnel hello windsor then toronto its a bout hour and 15 minutes up the road.

Re: Big Deck Progress Photos
The brick on the columns is matched exactly to the house, except for the brick on the house is 5 years older. It's Arriscraft Silver Mist. The two outside columns will have 3 pergola beams each going from the top of them to the house. The lower columns will likely have planters on the top of them. The conduit running inside the brick from the base to just under the caps is designed to hold either a water line for automatic sprinklers or wire for lighting (the owners haven't decided yet).
That's actually not ivy but grape vines. I did let them know about the dangers of vines on their brick but it was there long before I started the deck. This particular house isn't in Toronto, it's in Whitby (about a 45 min. drive from downtown TO). I don't know specifically how much this house cost but a similar one across the street, with a smaller lot, just sold for $850,000. This house overlooks a ravine and has a pretty big lot for the area. In the right neighbourhood in Toronto, they could probably get 1.5 million, or more, for it. One of their neighbours is Adam Foote (Team Canada defenceman and captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets). |

Re: Big Deck Progress Photos
Here's a few more pics as of the end of the day today. We got the natural stone caps up on the columns so all the masonry work is done.
And, let me tell you, putting the caps on the two 13' high columns wasn't easy! |

Re: Big Deck Progress Photos
Thanks for the compliment. No, I didn't design this one. This one's been on going for awhile. I hit water in digging one of the holes for the columns footings - they're over 4' below grade so that stalled and delayed things a bit.
With rain outs, etc. it took almost two weeks duration just to have the columns built. I framed what you see in a couple of days but had to stop where I did so the mason could put up the scaffolding and do his work. I'll have the framing completed by Monday, weather permitting and then go from there. Unfortunately, the days are shorter now which completely screws up my scheduling. Luckily this one is only 5 mins. from me, so travel time is virtually nothing. |

Re: Big Deck Progress Photos
Here's a few more progress pictures. As you can see the framing is done (the inspector looked at it for less than 5 min. before he passed it!) and close to half of the boards are down.
