Best Stain For PT Lumber
I have just redone a porch and was trying to find out what's the best stain for use on pt lumber. I need it to have a nice uniform color to it.

highest rated. Cabots oil base solid color stain. Lowes now sells a little cheaper than my regular paint store.

Re: Best Stain For PT Lumber
If a color is used can they be restained another color later? Say we choose white now and deside a year from now we want blue. Any special prep work needed? This is our own porch not for a customer. Thank's everyone.

Re: Best Stain For PT Lumber
Cabots oil for trans or semi-transparent
Sikkens Rubold DEK oil for solid The answer to your color change depends on if it's solid, trans or semi-transparent stain

Transparent or semi-transparent, I would recommend Ready Seal. Solid, cabots.

I wouldn't stain it until it dries out though |

Re: Best Stain For PT Lumber
Went with Cabot Clear Solutions natural deck stain for my own P.T. deck. $130.00 dollars per 5 gallon pail here. Gives a slick looking deep rich finish without darkening drastically, changing the color, or covering the grain.
The wood had sat/dried for about 8 months and was really starting to grey/bleach out. It sucked up the finish really well. The instruction said not to spray...to roll or brush only. I sprayed it anyway with a CH airless sprayer. Once I got the pressure right it worked fine and really layed it on. Wear a respirator and Tyvec suit with hood if you try spraying it. I put on 5 gallons in under 15 minutes. Had to back brush a few area's where went on a little too thick. Preperation was the key...by taking the time to mask and cover everything in harms way. I think they recommend not to spray because this stuff is light stuff about the consistancy of WD40 but has a lot of solids in it. Once stirred it had the look of coffee with a lot of creamer in it. Anyway, it atomized into a plume of overspray but worked well. In my case the light breeze carried the overspray off into the woods (hope the EPA aint reading this). I covered windows, doors, and siding anyway. Once down and dry (BTW-it took two full days to dry), it really beads the water and brings out the natural features. Be sure you have two days of clear weather on the back end. I had one small patch where condensation from the ac unit caused some whitening (it went away once the sun hit it the 3rd day). I looked at some of the semi-solid and semi-transparent stains from other companies sold at both Lowes and HD. What sold me was that Lowes actually had some Pressure Treated deck samples with most of their various product lines applied to them. The cedar and redwood finishes of certain brands looked like cheap halloween paint on the P.T. samples. The grays looked like watered down paint...terrible in my opinion. My initial research led me to the Flood CWF product line. I ended up with Cabots Clear and am really digging it. I would have went with the Cabot "heartwood" finish (which is slightly darker than natural) but they only had it in gallon cans. I needed 15 gallons. Last edited by CR295; 07-14-2006 at 09:08 PM. |
