Bench With Radiance Rail And XLM

I built this today. It looks easier than it was!

This is my first using XLM and Radiance, so I had to plan on the fly design-wise.

This ate up lots of material.

Re: Bench With Radiance Rail And XLM

I built the frame of the long leg on the deck to figure out where the joists were to attach my 2x4 cross members. Then I pocketed 4x4's through the deck and bolted them to the sides of the joists.

The whole frame is basically resting on the tops of the post sleeves. I then Ledgerlok'd through the frame into post (not shown).

Soild as a rock.

I herringboned the inside corner rather than mitering since I thought it looked nicer.

Looks great.

I'm not big on that seam 2' from the corner, - - it sometimes looks less visible lined up with the next railing post to the right, keeping the eye from jumping, - - but I don't know what all your choices were.

Only other thing is I'd have rather just seen a 'half-clipped' corner on the end of the bench, - - but that's just my own taste.

I agree that the herringbone looks much better than a long miter-line.

Beautiful work . . .

So that's XLM decking with the concealoc hfs? I don't like the size of those gaps between the boards. I just returned the Tigerclaw TC-G clips today for that very reason. They create a 1/4" gap! I prefer 1/8", I think it just looks nicer. The only hfs I could find locally that creates a smaller gap is Eb-Ty, so that's what I'm going with.

More like 3/16. I don't mind the gap. The ConceaLOCS make for a very consistent gap unlike some other HFS systems out there.

The seams are inevitable and cannot be hidden. It used to bother me, but I realized there is nothing you can do when the fascia only comes in 12' lengths. Regardless of where you put a seam on that bench, it's going to be visible.

Good point about the half-clipped corner. I copied exactly what they had so my brain was in "copy" mode, not "create" mode.

Looks very nice Greg. i like the chamfered ends on the bench, less bruising. Two things i noticed, the symmetrics of the bench legs and any reason you didn't add blocking on both sides of the post to support the bench, looks prone to tipping on the ends. But i still like it.

You know, I thought I was going to have wiggle problems with this since it's freestanding more or less. The 4x4s are double Headlok'd to the joists below the deck, so they are very rigid. Once I Ledgerlok'd the 2x4 to the 4x4 above the post sleeve, they became bombproof. That sucker is solid. No movement AT ALL...

did you already have the 4x4's cut through the decking beforehand or did you do it after the decking was put down. I have to build some similar benches on an upcoming 20x26' deck and was trying to get ideas to plan them. Looks great btw.

No. I figured out the width of the box/frame and built it on the deck. I then took a combination square and slid it down through the board gaps to find the edges of the joists which I then transferred to my frame so I could put the blocking in the right spots (ie, right over the deck joists).

I put the blocking in the frame then used my 4x4 tracing template to mark out the holes for the posts. Drilled and jigsawed to make the holes. I tack a framing nail at 10" from the bottom of the post to hold it at the right height above the deck while I screw the post in.

FWIW, it took me about 4.5 hours to build that bench.

Right, - - sometimes seams can't be avoided, - - but to me, - - a seam that falls just short of a corner tends to look more like an error than part of the plan. If it was in line with that next railing post to the right, - - it would not only fall 'in line' with an already existing visual line, - - it would look more symmetrical with the length of the fascia on the adjacent bench.

Just my opinion, - - and something to think about, - - it's a beautiful job either way . . .
