Aurora Decking
Has anyone here had any experience with Aurora decking? I've been to their website and seen the pictures and installation documents, but I have some questions about some aspects of the installation. The system I'm going to be pricing uses biscuit style clips to hold it to the joist and a fascia material to cover the ribbon board and stair risers.
Questions are as follows; 1. How is the starter channel attached when installing the decking perpendicular to the house? Do the biscuits that hold each board down also hold it down? 2. Do you cover the stair stringer with the fascia pieces? How? The stairs have a 7-1/2" rise and 12" tread. 3. Is there any acceptable way to install the system not using the fascia pieces and screwing the finishing trim in place? 4. Do you have to do a lot of shimming or planing of joist to get it perfectly flat? I would talk to the factory technician about this but he is away and I am not comfortable with the answers I got from his fill in. It's also nice to get someone’s opinion who has actually had to try and make a buck installing the stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill |

Re: Aurora DeckingQuote:
I had a deck built with Quadra (same as aurora) check out this website I put together for it. (edit I can't post URLs until I have 15 posts) If you search for quadra on the diychatroom you should be able to find my weblink to my deck building project. I think you will find the pictures and commentary useful. I'll answer your questions as best I can 1. Yes the biscuits hold the starter channel down. This can be seen on page one of the installation instructions. (edit I can't post URLs until I have 15 posts) Its on auroras website. 2. I'll assume you are talking about the sides of the stairs. Yes you can use the facia piece to do this. However it is very tedious and I would not recommend it. Check out my pictures and commentary and you will understand what I am saying. It amounts to lots of precise miter cuts and trimming. As I mention in my write up I would cover the sides of the stringers with either a composite or vinyl 2"12 board. On aurora's website there is one picture of a deck with a white vinyl board covering up the stair stringer. 3. Because the facia is only 6" high you need to use two pieces to cover the 2x10 rim joist. I used a biscuit to hold the top piece in and then screwed the the bottom piece on. Make sure you counter sink the screws so they don't leave depresions in the vinyl. 4. My contractor didn't and there isn't much squeak in my deck boards. I used the micropro treated wood, which I think is a little dryer from the lumber yard than the ACQ soaked stuff. I would recomend keeping those joists as straight as possible otherwise you will get some squeaks. In my commentary I talk about how I had a joist brace pushing up on a deck board and how I fixed it. The instructions recommend 16 on center, but I would go a little closer than that to avoid any percievable bounce between the joists. I like my deck a lot. Good Luck! |
