Attaching Deck Ledger To Brick Veneer House

We will be attaching a 2 x 12 deck frame to a house with brick veneer (full brick) over standard 2 x 4 wall construction. We would like to learn the best and safest way to attach the ledger....it doesn't seem smart to start removing bricks and attaching directly to the sill ring as we're concerned that the bricks left above the ledger might eventually break loose. Plus, if we do that, correct flashing seems problematic. We are seeking a safe and effective solution....this is a 34' long deck that will stick out 20' from the building and is 8' above grade. thanks.

Rubber bands. Most codes won't allow you to attach a ledger to a brick veneer wall, either free standing or remove some bricks. Do a search there are some other methods and ideas, as this same topic was brought up not to long ago.

Free standing is about the only thing you are going to get past any building department.

You cannot support on or attach a ledger to brick veneer.

The brick veneer is not designed or built to have any loads applied to it.

we did alot of these in N.C. on the houses we built. you just have to drill through the veneer and all the way through the rim joist and attach with 3/4 galvanized lag bolts, nuts and washers 16" O.C. you may have to put a 2x spacer between the rim and veneer as well. Should not be a problem with any inspector.

why not double or triple (depending on span and loads) the last and first joists. Make them pocket beams by removing the affected brick only at those ends and cutting a pocket in the band joist onto bearing, Then joist hanger a double or triple adjacent to the brick veneer Then joist hanger your individual joists off of that?

(edit), or you can make double joists as your pocket beams every ten feet so you wouldn't need triples.

Re: Attaching Deck Ledger To Brick Veneer House

i have made spacers out of 304 stainless. i make them 1 1/2 dim. by 4 1/2" long then drill a 11/16 hole through it. then take a 1 1/2 bit in a rotary hammer drill. drill through the brick and stop at the rim. put the spacers in with epoxy. then put the ledger up with 5/8 gal. through bolts. with the spacers the ledger is off the brick about a inch depending on the air space behind the brick. i have only done this on decks where freestanding is out of the question. i make my own spacers because i have access to a machine shop. any machine shop could make these for you. they will be a little expensive though. be sure to run it by your inspector first, because code says not to attach to brick vaneer.
