Are you attaching to TGI joists? Or the rimboard you are supposed to use for rims? If you are using the rimboard you are allowed to lag to it in most cases. If you had planed to attach to the joists that would be a no no. I would replace it with rim OR LVL.

This advice is based upon assuming that the deck is NOT attached to a cantilever. In these cases the rim would be engineered most cases just inverted hangers.

As long as it is the 1 1/4" thick rim and it is not on a cant you should be able to lag to it. Your local inspector MAY feel differantly so I would check with him to be sure.

If you are framing it and have the option I would use an LVL there if you can. And make sure that the rim is nailed to every joist and the sheathing is nailed well to the rim. Also make sure the nails from the wall also go into the rim as this will help hold it even more.
