Another Deck Project
Things on this forum seem to be a little slow, so here is my latest deck for critiquing.

Re: Another Deck Project
I think that's a matter of taste.
Obviously, the extra ones are architectural, rather than functional. IMHO -I think it look's nice with the extra posts.

Re: Another Deck Project
Any less posts and the deck boarder would have gaps in it. The posts create symmetry. Almost Japanese in styling. The correct number of posts were used for the design!
Post Script: Do not get the "symmetry" statement???? One word.....Windows.

Very nice & dresses up a very bland side of the house. Who designed that house? Ugh.

Re: Another Deck Project
Very nice.... ipe? I do like how you made the bench posts - the shadowlines take the deck up a notch.
Was the thought behind making the deck a step down from the door to keep it under 30", obviating the need for handrails? Or are you up in snow country? Mac |

Very nice ipe deck Mark. Different looking legs on those benches. What exactly did you do there?

Looks great, stair width (to yard)? I know why, what about the inspector?

Re: Another Deck Project
Very Nice!
Since you asked for it...I would have considered making the landing in front of the door deeper.

Re: Another Deck Project
Not out here, hammer = inspector out this way, the only thing you can do without a permit is a patio.

Re: Another Deck Project
Thanks guy's. The post served it's purpose and got some activity.
The back of the house is not quite as bland as it appears in the pics. All of the doors and windows are custom made and there are some interesting trim details. The depth of that back step is 3', how much deeper would you like it. All the deck heights were stipulated by the owner and it works out that all the rises are about 7" multiples off the existing surfaces, except the door, which they wanted under the sill. Not quite snow country, but it will snow occaisionally. The bench supports are a product of trying to use up scraps. These used a lot of them. They start with 2x12 redwood left over from the fascia/rim joist. Then you get 2 - 4/4x6 ipe, flush with the outside edge of the 2x12. This creates a little gap between the 2, so you get another piece of ipe. Finally, to cover the seams at the front and back, we use a piece of 1x3 ipe. The spacing of the posts is that Japanese thing. |

Re: Another Deck Project
No permits required here in CA. for decks under 30" above grade. This one was 21" max.

Re: Another Deck Project
I like all of the shadow lines
on the bench legs. Wish I could sell more of that pretty wood. Looks great.

A couple of more pics. We finished late in the day and the sun wasn't in the optimal position.

Re: Another Deck Project
I know what you mean by the sun & taking pictures. I've taken some of the same thing that turned out very different looking, color-wise because of the sunshine.
Good use of scraps Mark. |
