You must have the fastest two humans on earth. When I read things like this I wonder if I am THAT slow or I am just a lot more conscientious about the final product. Granted, I don't build PT decks, but screwing off a 24 x24 deck takes about two days in and of itself.

Totally agree with you Greg.

Also, to Brock, I can't speak to your market or your personal business costs AND maybe it's just me but is $13/sq. ft. for a PT deck including railings, stairs and handrails really a reasonable price in your area?

Because, I can't for the life of me imagine doing a deck that size, properly, for that low a price. And, BTW, properly is they only way I would do it.

I would pay you during your lunch break and simply tell you to find a new line of work.

Standard P/T deck in Kansas on new construction is 10' x 16' you will get $800 to build it (labor only). View-out basements decks are 5' above ground. You better hope that you are working alone and you can do two in a week. You have to carry your own insurance.

I guess I won't be building any decks in your area then

I wouldn't bother to get out of my truck for $5/sq. ft. to build ANY deck!

I wouldn't even demo and remove an old deck for $5 a foot!

Re: 24x24 Deck

We continue to break the previous years record for new home construction and it is a dog eat dog business. You have to be damn good and damn fast and willing to work sunup to sundown 7 days a week or you aint gonna make it in new construction here. Every builder cuts the next builders price and passes it down the chain to the little guy.

Working sunup to sundown 7 days a week means find another way to pay your bills.
Damn good and damn fast usually don't go together. Why don't you branch out and find some better-paying, slower-paced custom decks? Sure would beat that craziness you're in.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. That's not work, that's slavery of sorts.

You'd be better off working at Best Buy.

Greg, anyone who is building builder decks is not building CUSTOM DECKS like we do. I have seen where a builder deck builder has tried to get into the custom market. Wow they suck.

Exactly!

I'd rather take 2 weeks on one deck and make $5-10K then bust my balls and make $400 a week building crap for a builder.

Brock, that 10'x16' deck that you built for $800 (divided by 2) is what I get paid $500-$1,000 to take down and haul away and then make another $5-10K to replace with a properly built, attractive deck.

as an aside, based on the location, size and aspect ratio of this deck, taking into account the spans, # of footings and irc, you're talking about 2x10 joists, double 2x12' beams and footings with 22" dia, I think your a little short on your material figures. either way forget it and move on
No, His name isnt Jeff Huss

We don't work any "new construction" jobs. We have built a handfull of new homes over the years though. I have a buddy that works the decks on new homes, that's how I know the pricing. The siding subs for new const. here are in the same boat and I have another friend that does that. He works a regular job 2nd shift and slaps siding on first shift. He said he would go broke if it was his only job and he is lightning fast with about 15 years experience.Tons of work but you have to be super efficient. Dozens of guys trying to undercut you daily. If you need two days to screw down a deck and can get somebody to pay you to do it then more power to you. All you would get here is the chance to give your estimate.

All screws are in a straight line, spaced exactly the same on each board, sunk to the same depth. There's only so fast you can go, but what do I know.
