Wiring/grounding For Diesel Tank?

I have a Diesel tank at my fire dept. that has to have power run to the pump. I plan on running Rigid with a sealing eye for explosion proof. If I install a LB between the "eye" and the pump does it have to be explosion proof? What are the grounding requirements for the steel frame of the tank? It is a 1000 Gal. above ground. Anything else I should know that is not obvious? Has anyone ever run electric to one of these tanks?

Re: Wiring/grounding For Diesel Tank?

All electrical devices used with or located within twenty (20) feet of the tank should conform to NFPA 70 Hazardous Locations. All electric conduits and wiring connected to the tank should be explosion proof and in strict accordance with NEC Class-1, Division 1 or other local standards whichever is stricter.

Depending on your jurisdiction they may require that all wiring within 30 feet meet the above.

Is this a steel tank or a concrete encased steel tank?

Do you have secondary containment?

Do you have overfill protection and a overfill reservoir?

Don't forget the emergency shutoff switch with sign.

And yes the tank has to be grounded for lightning protection.

Re: Wiring/grounding For Diesel Tank?

I will check with local jurisdiction. The tank is steel, and has a secondary containment.
Thanks for the info. I was going to run explosion proof within 20 feet, but didn't think of the emegency shut off.
